SMU admissions decisions

Why are admissions decisions still solely sent out through snail mail? Seems like you'd make all decisions viewable at a certain time like many graduate programs. I believe Stanford MBA's Dean actually calls each admitted student on the same day. That's a bit much for a class as big as SMU's but some people were freaking out on the College Confidential forum.

When I applied to ASU for grad school you just check your status online. I found out I got accepted a week before the letter arrived.

And, before you say anything, I applied to a very competitive program.

Not sure why all universities wouldn't have a similar online system.

SMU couldn't run a lemonade stand efficiently.

I FINALLY got my acceptance letter for grad school in June, I sent the letter back and then... nothing. It's July and I have no idea when I'll be able to register for classes, who I should talk to, nothing.

when our daughter applied for financial aid we called the SMU office after no response. got a voice mail to leave a message. after 1 1/2 weeks the person returned our call, said she was on vacation but the voice mail was the generic, "leave a message and I'll return your call". She also thought NJ was one hour behind Texas time zone. really a stupid person all around.

very poor representative of SMU. how sad.

lastly, at our daughters graduation they had an SMU board of trustee as the speaker. He started out saying, "SMU is a good school but not a great school". My god, after zillion dollars for tuition this jerk said this. unbelievable.

what a bunch of belly-achers. want some cheese with all that whine?

I think we must be doing something right - we are improving in virtually every area.

While we are improving in almost every aspect of the university that does not make SMU free from criticism. If indeed we are being cumbersome or downright lazy with regards to admissions that needs to get fixed.

I love SMU and wouldn't change a thing about my decision to attend. But to suggest that the administration gives a [deleted] about anything other than $$$ is laughable. Every student is just a number to them- nothing more.

ECM,

Which makes SMU like 99.999999% of schools around the country. That said, for the price tag, you expect a little better customer service.

Probably true. Granted, I don't have any other colleges to compare it to. But I remember being like eight hours late one semester paying tuition and got hit with some absurd late fee penalty. Then, the next semester, SMU overcharged me by $1,700, threatened to impose another late fee if I didn't pay the incorrect amount on time, and took three months to refund me the money I was owed.

Again, I love SMU but the administration can go pound sand. Also, the handling of that SAE kid's police report after he died a few years ago on campus was atrocious. SMU tried for years to keep that from his family under the guise that SMU is a private institution and the SMU PD is not subject to FOIA requests like any other police department would be...that was just unconscionable and frankly made me embarrassed to be an SMU alum.

And don't forget the continued employment of Dr. Lori White. That, in and of itself, is basically an irrefutable admission that the administration itself needs tangible improvement.

I know, I know. Very low hanging fruit there.

wah wah wah…..buck up. Don't be late with your payment and you have nothing to cry about. And yes - it is their job to care about money since that what makes the place run - we don't have a state tax pig trough or a bunch of oil wells cranking it out for us - so the fact that we have accomplished academically what we have on thousands of seperate private donations over the years is amazing.

Our administration on whole is better than most. They generally listen and change what can be changed. People complain about Lori White because she has to tell people what they don't want to hear - that it isn't always about them. We have a ton of spoiled kids around our school that aren't used to hearing no - and when they do they are used to getting their way regardless - so it is not an easy job.

And almost every University in the country announces admission decisions on a rolling schedule in the mail by school or department.
