Our running horse logo?So is it a copy of the Ford Mustang logo, simply reversed? If so, I don't like doing that. Reminds me of Texas Tech and their spare Yosemite Sam mascot. Makes your team look small time and derivative.
Re: Our running horse logo?Just look at it as the Ford logo being SMU's in reverse. That should make you feel better.

Re: Our running horse logo? Those Arkansas hills just drip with wisdom.
From what I can gather, the logo was picked up for the 1968 season and other than a few years in the '70's has been a staple ever since.
Re: Our running horse logo? It's not an exact mirror image.
Re: Our running horse logo?Understood, but it seems to me the question is whether the general public sees it as a "borrowing" of the Ford Mustang logo. The answer is undeniably yes, and I think it makes us look a bit high schoolish. Maybe it's too late for this conversation -- see the running Mustangs in concrete on the side of Ford Stadium. But if I could I'd change the logo back to a previous version, or a new version altogether.
Re: Our running horse logo? What was the logo before the "Running Mustang"? I tried to search, but I couldn't come up with anything. I did find the following:

Re: Our running horse logo?Wow, somebody complaining about the one thing I don't think anybody has ever complained about related to SMU...
Interesting. And, no, our logo is not a mirror image of the Ford Mustang logo - the Ford logo is a phony pony anyway. Shake It Off Moody
Re: Our running horse logo?I don't know that I'm "complaining." I do know that there are some out there who look at the logo and think, they ripped that off from Ford. Doesn't it seem a bit high schoolish to you?
Re: Our running horse logo?
The only thing that seems high schoolish about it is caring if some people think we ripped off their logo. I just do not see the reason for concern.
Re: Our running horse logo? Here's the official word on Peruna. It's a registered trademark.

Re: Our running horse logo? And here's a .gif that I've had for years - at one time it was one of many animated cursor options for Windows 95/XP.
It "sortakinda" looks like Peruna in full gallop... ![]() Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.
Re: Our running horse logo?
The argument is not whether a couple of preppy white guys on here who grew up with the logo find it a problem. It's whether the general public, those we're trying to reach out to so that we can grow the program, would see it as high schoolish and derivative.
Re: Our running horse logo?
They could think the name mustangs high schoolish and derivative just as easily as they think the logo is, couldn't they? If not, why not? Also, do we know each other? Seems like you have a pretty good handle on my background so it made me wonder. Or maybe it is just a safe guess about most people who post on here.
Re: Our running horse logo?
OK, "complaining" is probably a bit strong, but I have never heard anybody question the logo since it is so iconic. To be fair, to an outsider, you probably do have somewhat of a point. When you see a high school copy an NFL or college logo, it looks ridiculous. This is obviously a bit different, but I can understand the logic behind your question. Shake It Off Moody
