New Construction

So I was looking into construction and noticed a couple cool (or I think they are cool) things happening around SMU.

Track: looks like there is a study going on about resurfacing the track and expanding the straightaways. * guess they aren't planning on getting rid of it anytime soon*

Aquatic Center- Haven't seen water pony around. I see that there are planning the design? How is this looking?

Adding DART campus stops with Dart benches, * is that really needed? just throw an SMU bench up

dedman center lifetime sports- getting themselves a starbucks

Speed Tunnel: ????? anyone out there know of this

Getting some more fountains in the new NE quad ( taking out the parking lot where Ford research building will go)

Starbucks vestibule in fondern

fiji is getting renderings done for a new house.

Sigma chi is moving, breaking "ground" in march. Will move to dyer court (don't know if next to PIKE or next to Lambda Chi)

You get this from the SMU website? Curious where you were looking - would like to check it out, too.

sigma chi is moving next to pike and SAE. Not breaking ground in march though - more like next early fall.

new alumni center will be where the Sigma Chi house currently is.

Fiji is a ways off.

Happy to hear we have more fountains going in. We are a bit low in that area (sarcasm off)

Has there ever been any talk of the return of the ATOs?

There's a list of about 15-18 Greek organizations that have varying levels of interest in opening a chapter at SMU if possible. Don't know if they're on it.

I think SMU is pretty reluctant to add any chapters - want the existing ones to all be healthy and that has been hit and miss.

Saw on FB that Student senate just passed legislation for hughes trigg to be renovated. Trustees have to look into now or something like that

If alumni center goes there, that eliminates that option for the Perkins Natatorium spot. Student center and classroom space are the other options from my understanding

It's been known for awhile that HTSC would be renovated, but the question is; what form does the renovation take? Depends on what happens on the natatorium plot: if it's a new student center, HTSC would be renovated to provide greater meeting facilities. If it's not, HTSC would be renovated to be a more functional and inclusive student center.

Interesting. That makes a lot of sense.

I'd actually like to see HT more functional for students to hang out in, in between classes. It always seemed a little dead if it wasn't around lunch time. Plus they need to bring kids in there afterhours when classes are over.

Cue the On campus Bar crowd.

That crowd includes me but I don't think a Hughes-Trigg pub is in our future, unfortunately

That makes sense. Im not involved in senate but their facebook page posted "BREAKING: Thanks to our senators' hard work and great legislation, SMU Board of Trustees is moving forward with planning a new Student Center."

HT seemed outdated even in the 90s. On campus pub is a must imo. At least in the alumni center!
