I just don't understand why we can't do something similar with UT Southwestern/Parkland. Our research science department is so small it's embarrassing.

At least our engineering school is moving upward & relatively fast too.

It's interesting how SMU has had a relationship w/ UT southwestern for eons but never progressed past that???

there is no need for UTSW to do something like this

UTSW already offers MD degrees

currently unless something has recently changed the north Texas state HSC is legislatively prohibited from offering a MD degree and thus the MD degree will come through TCU

and north Texas state has failed time and again to get funding or legislative approval to offer a MD degree and this last session it was not even brought up thus the need for north Texas state to partner with a university that can offer a MD degree and that can bring the funding to do so as well

it would make more sense for SMU to call TCU, UD, Baylor, Texas Wesleyan, Dallas Baptist and maybe even Austin College and see if they can all bring enough money and clout to start a medical school in Fort Worth sans north Texas state and all of their issues.....perhaps even McMurry, Abilene Christian and Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne

each school gets slots based on funding they bring to the table for a starting endowment and yearly

I hadn't heard of a D.O. (osteopathic) before. I figured it was a doctor of optometry.

this is nothing but a partnership of convenience and really at the end of it all it will be a case of "brinkmanship" (for lack of a better term)

medical schools are expensive to start from scratch and the north Texas state system strongly desires to offer a MD degree, but they are not able to do so legally because of legislative prohibitions going back to the bill that changed the name of TCOM to the north Texas state health science center

north Texas state claims (they make a lot of false claims) that they can get a MD program going for about $25 million and they have most of that in private donations

The State of Texas has been burned by similar claims about the "need" for the failed north Texas state dallas campus that is a major waste of money and the failed north Texas state college of law that is a waste of money and then there is the recent $90 million in accounting and financial controls "issue" at north Texas state

so the State of Texas is not really buying into their low ball BS projections and failed promises anymore especially when Austin and South Texas (areas that can show more need for a medical school) are actually stepping up with major cash BEFORE the approval is in place

so TCU wants something and north Texas state wants something

TCU has money and north Texas state has (claimed and refuted) "available space and low cost ability" to simply fast track a MD degree into their existing D.O. program

at the end of the day I am pretty positive this deal with either get shot down before it comes to fruition or it will fall apart shortly after it is "too late to turn back"

let me be clear TCU is taking a chance and IMO they are taking a good "risk".....but the risk is that it all falls apart at about the time that there is a group of students possibly left in limbo and there will be the need for TCU to step up and have the ability to break away and take full control of the MD degree program and run it and staff it and provide a building for it to be located in

the reality is there is really no benefit to this from the aspect of north Texas state offering a MD degree because north Texas state presently can't offer a MD degree at the HSC and north Texas state will not be able to do so for at least two years because the legislature will have to approve it

and the reality is if north Texas state gets that approval they really will not need TCU other than for the money that TCU can bring to the table that north Texas state can't

so knowing how north Texas state operates as soon as they get approval for a MD degree (if ever) they will soon make things "difficult" for TCU in so far as just being pieces of crap and running TCU off

from the TCU perspective they hopefully are aware of this and how north Texas state operates and they will be able to step in and hold down the ability for north Texas state to offer a MD degree while at the same time being able to point to concrete evidence that north Texas state is trying to move them out if they do get that approval

and in the process Fort Worth and overall "Fort Worth Supporters" will by that time have such a strong desire for a MD program they will step up and back TCU to get a full program outside the auspices of north Texas state

each needs the other in the short term, but it is difficult to see either of them needing the other in the long term if they both get what they want and it is difficult to see both of them getting what they want (each with a MD program they control)....so there will be a winner and a loser....I would place my money on TCU being the winner in Fort Worth

I would put my money on TCU getting what they desire long term as Fort Worth finds it easy to want to distance from slimy dallas piece of crap politician lee jackson

if TCU really plays their cards right this all falls apart before it even gets started except Fort Worth gets a [deleted] for a MD program and gets behind TCU 100% and north Texas state keeps doing whatever it is they do (having administrative conflict and wasting state resources with little or no accountability)

Just over $200K isn't crazy for a diversity chief. It depends upon the other duties. I presume that role falls within student affairs. Dr Lori White surely made over $300K at SMU but she headed all of student affairs. Did she have a diversity officer reporting to her?

If you have never heard of a DO before, you must be living in a very isolated society.

IDK there is a shortage of grad students working in UTSW research labs and half empty lecture halls because most UTSW lectures are podcasted online...seems to me it would take much less than $25M in donations to negotiate some guarantee some sort of collaboration program...see what Rice has with Baylor School of Medicine. Rice doesn't have a medical hospital facility but still offers a medical degree plan.

I don't know the dynamic between DOs and MDs but the doctors certainly do feel the difference is enough to start a [deleted] contest over the distinction. Seems the DOs that have gone through UNT's med school feel threatened or are just not pleased about UNT pursuit of offering an MD program. DOs are real doctors that have the same training as MDs with a focus on manipulative medicine which a segment of MDs consider unorthodox and just plain bad medicine. I think it boils down to prestige and to be more standard as far as why UNT would want an MD program. It also would mean more research dollars.

In the background - I think that TCU needs to have a plan B in place in the event politics quashes UNTs involvement. I think they need to be ready to do it by themselves or with other partners in mind because UNT's political masters might make this difficult.

DO schools are not research focused while MD programs are not always research focused, but they very often are

DOs are pretty much primary care physicians although nothing stops them from moving to other areas, but their medical school training will be primary care

the north Texas state system is a research weakling so they need all the help they can get

No idea why TCU would want to be aligned with UNT on this anyway - but good for them on trying to add something important.

SMU needs to move this to the front of our list. I know we have a loose relationship with UTSW as to access and occasional teaming - but if that is all we can get we need to consider other options. We MUST beef up our pre med/science area if we are to access research dollars with the regularity required to get any notice. We aren't going to get it done with just random Dedman activity combined with engineering

I think some of our issue is we have donors with deep relationships to both SMU and UTSW - and that makes it tough if UTSW would view any other relationship as competitive with their efforts.

Seems like a natural would be teaming with Methodist - however I don't know much about how all of that works.
