I agree, its worth noting SMU is the highest ranked national university on the list

I literally hadn't heard of 6 of the 10 schools on that list...

Why is SMU's room and board $6K more than A&M's? Yes, SMU's is nicer and it's more expensive land but $600+ more per month?

Almost every dollar should be accounted for, and the alumni should know what our money is being used for. Even though we can be proud of a tree lined campus at the heart of Dallas, more money needs to be put in getting better faculty, reducing our overall administrative staff & student debt, and ensuring we are able to keep talented students in Texas, or at least North Texas. Our ranking will not go up just because our campus looks better. Look at MIT, they have an ugly campus but they focus on the right things.

Actually, it points to the fact that certain people think that they can make judgments based upon "their" understanding of financial statements. #transparency

Anyone who would suggest that pricing decisions can be evaluated based upon GAAP numbers doesn't understand ANYTHING about financial statements, accounting, or managing a business. From a decision making perspective, Cost Accounting is fundamentally different from GAAP accounting. Only idiots make business decisions based upon GAAP numbers alone.

Often, the same people think that University Boards stupidly "hoard" money in ever growing endowments.

Very true but didn't the US News ranking drop 3 points this year? It's within a margin of error but hopefully the demand pushes the rankings up over the next few years and not just costs.

I am not sure about the ranking issue.

Furthermore, I am not sure how the new dorms impact housing costs for the typical SMU upperclassman. If they are actually “required” to live on campus beyond the first year, they cannot take advantage of all the off campus housing in the area.

BTW - I probably shouldn’t have gotten so annoyed by the prior post. It still amazes me how many people think that they can understand financial statements. They don't understand that a business can easily change the cost of providing any services by how they allocate costs. For all we know, RGT built a $1K per year " campus fountain load" into the cost of providing a dorm room in the Freshman Quad.

If demand is so great, why is SMU still seeking applications for next fall from both entering freshmen and transfer students?

I question the wisdom of including SMU on the list as it leads to articles like this:

The other Texas schools on the list are: Concordia, Howard Payne, Southwestern Adventist, Southwestern Assemblies of God, Texas A&M at Galveston, Texas State, UT Arlington, UTSA, Incarnate Word, and Wayland Baptist.

I wouldn't say we are in good company.

Apparently not accepting freshmen, just transfers, like Florida and Syracuse.
