orguy, of course Shields would be the fall guy. Was he complicit in the athletics cheating? I've heard that SMU's cheating wasn't worse than most other programs, just more overt. That occurred before I graduated from HS and I didn't really follow college stuff much before college.

In terms of Northeastern, yes, I lived in the Northeast for a while and it didn't have much of a rep except a commuter school. Their president radically transformed the university to move up the rankings. For Fall 2023, Northeastern had 97K apps and admitted just 5.7%. The mean SAT of enrolled students was 1488. It also has a six year graduation rate of 90.4% which SMU would like to emulate. The kids I've known that have gone to Northeastern have been rather nerdy, but one was quite solid, and wanted Boston locale.

I'd want SMU to be more like Vandy, Villanova or Miami. Urban powerhouse for research with strong academics and athletics.

Yeah, my grandfather got his MA in engineering from Northeastern and went on to become a literal rocket scientist for Pratt and Whitney - smart guy, fits your description.

I'm all for research, and of course we could have both, but our heart is a humanities school with a strong business school. I'd like to keep an emphasis on liberal and fine arts that I see modern academia ignoring.

Yes, I remember Northeastern's US news campaign. Guess it bore fruit. Admittedly, had
no idea they had a 5.7 percent acceptence rate. Impressive. We have a 52 percent rate.

Thanks "Dr" Turner.

SMU's heart is not as a humanities school. We are not Harvard or Brown and never
will be. Kenneth Pye disagrees with me.

Okay, then, honest question, what are we?

We aren't a STEM school. Nothing against it, but we aren't built like this. Over the years we've moved certain buildings and resources, like Hyer Hall, to the Humanities and Social Sciences schools and this shows our direction. We've put some money into Engineering, and I'm all for that, but it's not our calling card.

We have a strong business school, but it's more of a nice 'add' then the heart of our school. Our fine arts department actually has an impressive history, as does our theology school, but I don't think anyone would consider us either primarily an artist's college or theological school.

We don't have to be Harvard or Brown to build a strong reputation in certain fields, like RISD for art, Iowa for writers, Mizzou for Journalism, or South Carolina for international business, and if we aren't trying to compete, why do it at all? Say what you want about Turner, but we've re-engaged the city of Dallas, built the financial backing of our boosters and alumni, which are impressive, and are now working to expand our name from coast-to-coast.

So, again, what do we want to become? What do ya'll want SMU to be, outside of successful in athletics?

Healthcare is almost 20% of our nation's GDP. A focus on healthcare professionals, including a Medical School, would be a game changer in how we are viewed.

Continuing to strengthen our Business School, including BS, BBA and MBA, should be a priority as well.

And especially STEM degrees. That's where the money is in our hi tech economy n addition to the biz school. Paying for that overinflated tuition SMU and other schools demand require top Paying jobs upon graduation. Humanities don't cut it anymore as a major emphasis.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
