SMU ranked No. 18 in Directors' Cup fall standings — highest in program history

CLEVELAND (NACDA) - SMU ranks No. 18 nationally in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Division I Fall Standings with 217.25 points, the highest ranking in program history.

In the Mustangs' inaugural year in the ACC, football made the ACC Championship game and earned the No. 11 seed in the College Football Playoff, volleyball earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Championship, men's soccer reached the NCAA quarterfinals and cross country finished fifth at the NCAA South Central Regional. SMU's fall teams combined to go 30-12-4 in ACC competition.

The Mustangs went 11-3 in football, going 8-0 in the ACC regular season to earn a spot in the ACC Championship Game. SMU was ranked as high as No. 7 and earned the No. 11 seed to the College Football Playoff. The program set a Ford Stadium season-attendance record (228,563), earned a postseason bid for the sixth straight season and was ranked No. 12 in the final AP Top 25. SMU was one of just two P4 programs nationally to go unbeaten in league play. SMU is just the sixth program to go at least 8-0 in the ACC and is by far the most successful of any program ever transitioning from G5 to P4.

SMU Volleyball went 25-8, including a 16-4 mark in the ACC. The Mustangs were ranked as high as No. 10 nationally and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Championship, hosting the first and second rounds for the first time in program history.

Men's Soccer went 12-3-6, earning the No. 12 overall seed in the NCAA Championship before advancing to the NCAA quarterfinal round. The Mustangs were ranked No. 5 in the final United Soccer Coaches poll.

Cross Country finished fifth in the NCAA South Central Region after being ranked as high as No. 2 during the season. The Mustangs had three All-Region honorees, the most since 2018.

The Mustangs fall teams had two Coaches of the Year. Volleyball Head Coach Sam Erger was the AVCA Regional Coach of the Year. Football Head Coach Rhett Lashlee earned the honor from the ACC and Dave Campbell's Texas Football. Lashlee is also a finalist for National Coach of the Year in Football.

Football set a Ford Stadium season attendance record of 228,563, recording five of the 12 largest crowds in stadium history. Volleyball also set a single-game attendance record of 6,773 in the win against No. 2 Nebraska and a season record of 30,976. The Mustangs accumulated 27 All-ACC honors, including 19 in football, and totaled 18 ACC Weekly Honors. SMU student-athletes earned 18 spots on national award watch lists, earned nine All-Region honors and eight All-American honors.

The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.

As a non-revenue, Olympic sports advocate, I have always valued higher Directors' Cup rankings as a worthy objective. I believe sports participation, whether at the varsity or club sports level adds much to a student's college experience and development.

Our promotion to the ACC advances the quality and nature of non-revenue sports, when combined with FB, MBB, and WBB.

Our future as a top tier university is elevated and, as a result, recognized by this initial Directors'' Cup ranking.
