rationalize all you want but for a Run and Shoot QB to have that completion % and yards per attempt is REALLY, REALLY Bad-below the Mendoza Line. 70% is the goal-65% is good-60% is very average-53% is poor in the Run and Shoot. He was running because he didn't know how the hell to run the offense. +21 alone in sacks. Yards per attempt is another red flag that he wasn't able to see his receivers downfield. Passing Rating was No. 111 out 116 QBs in the Country. There are rationalizations as to why he didn't perform better and whether he'll improve but if we are going to dog Piland its fair to compare him to Gilbert's significantly worse stats-look it up in the dictionary.

You're putting some things on Glibert's back that he is not fully responsible for (it's a team game)and using stats to bolster what I think is a weak argument. Late in the season some of those runs were designed plays and if he can run out of trouble for positive yardage free-lancing, all the better. I watched Gilbert blossom into a better QB as the season progressed because he had more options. The offensive players seemed to gain confidence in him as well. I would also question your assertion that he didn't know how to run the offense, I think he did.

I was just trying to bring some balance to the discussion about Piland being a total disaster while ignoring Gilbert's struggles. I think I've stated about 10 times that I believe in Senior experienced QBs and think generally that is a strong predictor of team success. But Piland now has 2 years experience too and whose to say he won't improve more than Gilbert as an upperclassman. Anybody who has followed SMU football over the last 2 decades has witnessed a parade of young phenoms who washed out by their sophomore year only to be replaced by the next phenom. I look forward to seeing what Gilbert can do in his Senior year.

I agree with SMU 86. The addition of Mumme (and Phillips) to the coaching staff should be BIG in all hollowed halls of football. What is going to happen on the field? Football fans at UT, A&M, ND and USC should be interested in what is going on at SMU. I know some of you are so mad at Coach Jones that you cannot appreciate what is happening on the coaching staff. However, people who love football, (not the casual fan or the ones that will not give JJ any credit) should be excited. Will they be able to put the master plan on the field? Na sayers will immediately argue NO!!! However, the connoisseur of the game will be excited to experience that which follows. And, if they are successful, every qb in high school, every receiver should HOPE to play at SMU.

I don't think anyone has said Gilbert was very good last year. Piland was not very good either. Was Piland statistically better than Gilbert? yes. Much better? no. If SMU had a better quarterback last year we would have won CUSA by easily beating Rice and Tulane. Additionally we would have beaten TCU and been very competitive with Baylor to get to 11-12 wins.

I don't think anyone thought we would get toasted by Houston 34-0. Next year looks bleak.

I suspect next year will really highlight how poorly and ineffectively jj has recruited. We lose some of our better players this year with no adequate replacements.
