Fame is spreading!Tuesday night at a Kroger store in Little Rock, Arkansas, a man saw my SMU sweatshirt and came over to me and asked "Did SMU win last night?" When I said Yes, he said "That Larry Brown can coach!"
Today I was gassing up my car in New Boston, TX, on the way home from Dallas and a guy next to me asked the same question "Did SMU win last night?". He was pleased with my answer. EVERYBODY now knows who SMU is and most are rooting for us! Go Ponies! Beat Clemson! Long live Inez Perez!
Re: Fame is spreading! As we all know the success of our Basketball Program reaches far outside of Dallas.
Quick story... Both my brother and I graduated from SMU, 1997 and 2000. My family and extended family live just outside of Houston. Yesterday before the game, my Mom, who also lives just outside of Houston was in line at a local grocery store wearing her favorite SMU shirt before the game. A stranger in line recognized her SMU shirt and told her that he would be rooting for our Mustangs at the game tonight. Conversation started. This stranger told my Mom that two of his co-workers (SMU Alums) were going to the game and were so excited. My Mom was so proud to be a Mustang! SMU Basketball making Moms happy everywhere! I am sure we could all share similar stories. Later that night, wearing her shirt, our family got together to watch our Mustangs win another impressive game at Moody. As a family we have gotten together to watch every SMU game this season. Just another great reason to spend time with family. So proud to be a Mustang!
Re: Fame is spreading!
I am happy that we are growing our reach. I thought Houston was more Aggyland than anything...but good to hear that Standup
Re: Fame is spreading!
R. Gerald Turner grew up in lovely New Boston.
Re: Fame is spreading!Half the office asked me about the game or had stated they watched it. Never before had an SMU sporting event been mentioned except as mocking or a punchline.
Larry Brown is our Caesar and this year is our first across the Rubicon. Alea iacta est "I think Couchem is right."
-EVERYONE
Re: Fame is spreading! My husband having his Chicago counterpart talking smack (as in a lesser BB tradition) to him because SMU is still playing while co-worker's beloved Big 10 bounced from the NCAA tourney! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
It makes sense to me.

And our Moses leading us out of bondage
Re: Fame is spreading!I put this in another thread, but I think it's worth repeating. FYI this took place in San Diego.
The guy who installed a new TV in our conference room a few weeks ago and I started chatting about the upcoming tourney (this was before it started). He asked who my team was, I said SMU. Before I could even start b*thcing about the selection committee, the guy bursts out "Oh SMU? Yeah you guys got [deleted] robbed. You were ranked right? How the [deleted] do you not let in a ranked team? Didn't you beat UConn twice too? That's insane! Yeah dude, that's all I've heard is how screwed SMU got. Tough [deleted] man. Larry Brown is the man though." The dude was a big Wisconsin fan. BOP - Providing insensitivity training for a politically correct world since 1989.
Re: Fame is spreading!I have seen a number of SMU t-shirts, sweatshirts, bumper stickers on cars here in Houston pop up within the past few months. The success of our Basketball Team is frequently talked about in the Houston community. No doubt that SMU Alums are behind a lot of the apparel and conversations, but there really have been many casual fans and non-fans who are talking more and more about SMU in Houston. Stangers talking to strangers about SMU Hoops. Got to love it!
Just last week my brother who is an SMU Alum took his first grade daughter to visit the SMU Campus on Spring Break. She has been watching SMU youtube videos about SMU Basketball, SMU Academics, you name it. At an early age she is already telling all of our family where she wants to go to college. My family has already promised her that if she makes the grades she can go to SMU. She fell in love with the campus! She tells her teachers and friends about SMU. Got to love it! She definitely wears her SMU t-shirts, sweatshirts, apparel everywhere she goes! Recently attending an outdoor festival of sorts and had "SMU" painted on her cheek. A much younger generation is learning about SMU and falling in love with our school. Start them out early.
Re: Fame is spreading!A friend I've seen only rarely since we worked together in the 80s called me to ask about next week's game schedule. She had seen the Bryant Gumble interview with LB and is now a fan.
Re: Fame is spreading!
Houston is everyone's land. I've seen pretty much every Texas school branded on people's houses/yards and the back of cars.
Re: Fame is spreading!
The husband of my son's babysitter saw my SMU sweatshirt and said "Hey, you guys beat Uconn twice this year." Even people in CT have started to pay attention. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Fame is spreading!Would be nice to hear of more SMU fans in Charleston, but I've done my part in converting a few. Of course, my SC friends who were apathetic up until now are on the bandwagon and pulling for us to beat Clemson
Re: Fame is spreading!I'm in Phily this weekend for a quick business trip and have owners box tickets to the Flyers game. I'm wearing my SMU jersey to the game, maybe I'll get on TV, get some good publicity for the Stangs!
Re: Fame is spreading!
My aunt and uncle in law live on New street, and cousin-in-law's family on St. John's Island -- and I can only assume they root for their favorite niece and cousin-in-law's alma mater (when not cheering for the Jayhawks or [deleted]). As Cocky fans, I'm sure of it on Tuesday.
