Martin not starter?I just saw the article linked on the front page, so if this is discussed in another thread I'm sorry.
Why would Martin NOT be the starter? The guy is clearly a stud and looked far better than Massey or Dorsey! Surely Bennett is just being vague to keep the aggies guessing?
Re: Martin not starter?
I wouldn't worry too much about this. He's being vague. Watch it in the press conference @ smumustangs.com. Regardless, with our offense it doesn't really matter who starts. I bet Martin will get 80% of the carries, especially if he has any success running against the aggies.
I think Bennett is wise to hedge a little bit about Martin. No so much to confuse A&M as to keep some pressure off of the guy. He is a freshman and he did have an amazing game to lead us to our biggest win in awhile, but the guy has had a lot of the spotlight this week. Bennett is trying to keep him grounded. Also, Dorsey and Massey are still good backs, no reason to discourage them if they have been doing what they have been asked. We need multiple rbs.
And you know that A&M will be keying on him.
It will be interesting to see what we can do off of play action. ![]() Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Everyone needs to chill. He did not start last week and got 23 carries. He will play a lot. At the press conference Bennett had no idea what Rusty Burns is going to call for the opening play of the game so he had no idea who will be on the field. Martin will get plenty of action whether he starts or not. It is never easy to keep a number of people at the same position happy. We have several decent running backs that all want time. Right now it appears that Martin may be the go to guy but you never know what will happen in the next game. After Baylor everyone on the board was touting Massey and wanting to know why he was not getting all of the time.
well, Bennett probably would have it your way, he has said many times he likes to "feed" a back and let them get a feel for the game. It may come to that with Martin which could be great because he is a big, strong, durable looking runner. Still, I like Bennett trying to keep him grounded after last week. Generally, I think SMU needs more than one rb because our backs take alot of punishment. We don't block extremely well and they take alot of square licks as a result.
Also, I disagree with using a fullback. Our O'line is not strong enough to open holes for long periods of time, our best option is to hit the hole as fast as possible. You do that without a fullback. That is why when we had Charles here, we never used a fullback.
The heat could also be a factor on Saturday. The forecast is for temperature in the high 90s and the heat around 105. We will need to rotate guys in at many positions to help keep them fresh, including RB.
JasonB,
Remember when Darryl Dickey was offensive coordinator here in 1997, 3 yards and a cloud of dust with FB and TE worked pretty well and our athletes were about the same on the O-Line (which is average or a little below)- there is no doubt Martin could benefit from a lead blocker and an extra guy on the O-Line in a TE
Do you remember at the end of the TCU game when we tried to do conventional handoffs out of a one back set? that was a disaster. We are at our best when we are handing the ball off out of the shotgun, giving teams two players to key on, and hitting the line as fast as possible. It keeps us from making negative plays. I do agree, however, that I would like to see two TE formations out there a bit more often. Chase and Kennedy are pretty good sized out there.
