True. They're only important for that first job, but that first job can set the tone for a good portion of your career. Of course you can overcome [deleted] grades (as a huge number of very successful people have), but it's probably easier to just get decent grades in the first place. It'll at minimum save you some angst in your early twenties.

If one class is a make or break one's career (first job, shaking the right hands, setting up for the future) then how the Hades did one get into SMU in the first place?????

Sure, a bad grade (or 2 or 3) hurts. All it means is you have to make up for it later. And it takes hard work to make up for it. But then it is a matter of ambition and determination, not watching one basketball game.

In my profession, I care for many terminally ill people. Not a single one has ever said to me, 'I wish I had worked harder.'

In fact, it is always the opposite. They all wish they had enjoyed life more.

It up to you and it depends on what is important to you so what we advise is worth very little. Just remember, as we get older, it isn't one class that we remember, it’s the course, the semester, the year that matters. And more goes into the course, semester and year than just one class.

Pfft, grades. What matters is learning how to think.

And a thinking man will know when that grade might matter. It all depends on your personal goal. Some people need the credentials, so they work for them. Some people don't, so they don't. If you're not sure which one you are yet, well that's what college is for.

But back to the original topic, in this specific instance I know I'd be skipping class to see the game. One class is no big deal.

Methinks this person to be a pre-death penalty MBand member.

Ponyte opines from a position of knowledge and wisdom earned by experience. My dad as an MD would concur with all ponyte said. Well done sir.

For what it's worth I would suggest emailing the professor out of respect. Tell him/her that you will not be there, you will do what ever you can to cover the coursework yourself, if he/she could assist you with that even better but the bottom line is that you will be supporting the school. You might also point out that your mind will be elsewhere in any case so it won't hurt if your body is too.

Voice of reason. Go to class. You or friends have DVR. I have a commitment and will be turning my phone, ipad and computer off until I get home (from Chicago) and watch the game starting around midnight tonight.

I have a commitment as well and will not be able to watch the game until around 7:30. However, I will be following the game on my SMU app during my commitment. And DVR the game so I can see it in its entirety at a later time.
