QB Matt Davis transferModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: QB Matt Davis transfercould be--playing in Tyler JC Spring Game shows he anticipated going back to Tyler JC for Sophomore year so that's probably right. The key here is that he was a full qualifier out of high school so he doesn't have to graduate with an AA from Tyler JC-just needs to meet following standards:
If you are a Qualifier: • Graduate from two-year college OR • Need to attend two-year college as a full-time student for at least one semester (excluding summer terms). • Average 12 transferable units of degree credit for each semester attended (excluding summer terms). • Need a minimum GPA of 2.50 in transferable units (student enrolling FT on or after August 1, 2012).  No more than 2 units of PE courses can be used to meet the transfer degree credit or GPA requirements "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: QB Matt Davis transferBTW what is Tom Rossley doing these days-since we can hire auxiliary football coaches hire Rossley as an associate to show June how he used Ramon Flannigan in his Run N Shoot(and why he was instrumental in recruiting Johnny Manziel) . I have serious doubts that you can plugg a round hole with a square peg. But if you spread the field and let an athlete like Davis utilize his skills then he could be a load. And I don't need comparisons to the modifications for Garrett Gilbert, a pro style QB, because that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking Vince Young/ Ramon Flannigan type of offense where the QB is the primary rushing threat. I just don't see that happening especially in Year 7 of June's SMU tenure

Re: QB Matt Davis transfer
Wow. No matter how he fits in it's awesome to add this kind of talent to the team. Shake It Off Moody
Re: QB Matt Davis transferYou don't come to SMU (these days) with that kind of pedigree to ride the pine. Just sayin'.
Will be an interesting summer. Burcham is going to have to truly earn it. June must not like what he saw in Spring to work hard finding another QB.
Re: QB Matt Davis transfer
True, June is definitely not going to use his QB like that. It goes against all his beliefs of what a QB should be. The new guy is likely to be more progressive and will see the wisdom in tailoring his offense to a talent like Davis. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: QB Matt Davis transferHere he is in really his only big game full opportunity in late September against usually nationally competitive Blinn. He is QB for Tyler with Black Jerseys. The highlites against quality competition include about 5 carries for about 150 yards including 2 home runs and also a game clinching TD run. Is he going to be given that kind of freedom in June's offense like a Vince Young/Ramon Flannigan? That's the question.

Re: QB Matt Davis transferHe's an incredible athlete.
This is the first time in forever I've been excited about our football team. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs
Re: QB Matt Davis transfer1) Throwing mechanics much better that VY coming out of high school.
2) One of the adjustments that was made last season - Mumme's influence on the offense was to make it more horizontal. Doing that absolutely killed the running game because other teams compressed the field. When we opened the field up later in the season and went back to vertical, it allowed us to run the ball much better with both the RB and the QB. 3) June certainly sees the value of the mobile QB. Other teams flood the secondary and a mobile QB can take advantage of the gaps. Can you imagine if GG had anywhere near the speed of this guy? 4) The QB is still going to have to be able to make all the throws. They can dumb down the offense to an extent and cut down half the field, which they did with both GG and KP (frosh year). But the deep out to the inside receiver thrown over a CB pressing the outside reciever is a staple of the offense. If you can't make that throw, you won't play. 5) I think June, with the recruiting of Davis and Colbert, is really trying to hit it big and find a mobile QB who can make all the throws. If he hits, it is a jackpot. If those guys don't work out, he will fall back to the pocket guys and move the two to WR. Either way, I highly, highly doubt we see either of them until 2015. Davis doesn't have a tenth of the experience of Gilbert coming in, and we saw how much Gilbert struggled his first year for the first six games.

You mean like Justin Willis? That would kind of bring jj full circle
QB Matt Davis transferMaybe the stubborn old man has seen the light - haha
Re: QB Matt Davis transfer
I would be lying if I said I wasn't yelling at the TV when June started molding his offense to fit Gilbert's skills in the second half of his junior year going on a 4-1 stretch to squeak in to a bowl game...exactly how he would have used JW his first year. But no, let's run BLM out there with no talent around him.
Re: QB Matt Davis transfer
My dad's first response was "how will June ruin his career?" If Davis plays QB, I hope they simplify the playbook and utilize Davis' athleticism. This be the most athletic guy we've had since...Margus? or since the 80s...? "smupony94: Harry, you have been promoted to purveyor of official status capabilities."
Re: QB Matt Davis transferModernize the offense and build the scheme to fit the players not the other way around. With a kid that has this kind of athletic ability trying to make him into Colt Brennan would be stupid. Use some WR motion, some two back sets, the zone read, etc. Give him the ability to do what he does best. If we do that we might have a fairly solid running attack with Davis, Nmelchi, and Gresham.
Back off Warchild seriously.
