This guy needs to be an uncommonly quick study in order to help us in 2014. Lucky for him there's not a ton of resistance at the position. With a couple of seasons to play he might have been something.

How many years of eligibility will he have? I am not sure what the rule is when changing sports.

Might have? Writing him off already?
That's sad. Let's see what the guy can do.

Just being realistic, I mean he's been out of the game a long time. Add in the R&S and FBS learning curves and he's just not likely to be useful to us with just one season of eligibility.

Chris Hipps:

Started all 20 games (as a defenseman) this season for Duke lacrosse.
Scored on the only shot he took during his senior season.

Greg Paulus from Syracuse made the magic happen. Maybe this guy can do some fraction of that for us.

I agree with you Ponyboy. There is entirely too much pessimism on this board. He obviously
is a great competitor and has the size to be a very good receiver. Hopefully Duke academics
will rub off on him, which would mean his smarts will help him learn our system quickly.

Playing at home in the Park Cities with friends and relatives watching will not be a negative
either. He might double our attendance. :D :D :D

I'm one of the least pessimistic people on this board, but I just don't know how quickly someone who hasn't played football for four years can adjust to everything that's asked of them at WR in the RnS. I hope I'm wrong and he has 100 catches for 1,600 yards and 20 TDs this year, though.

I wonder if the news about Kagawa getting out of his LOI with us and going to GT gave us a 'ship to use for 2014, though.

Just curious why everyone seems to be so quick to think the QB transfer will be able to step in and take over Jones' system quickly but a wide receiver will not be able to remember how to run routes after being. out a few years?

A good receiver can run good routes and would be fine. I do not know his ability but system should not be a problem.

When did that happen?

I hope that myrdel's take on this is right and that Hipps contributes. But I read this thread and an old, old memory came up. First of all, IIRC, Don Meredith was a multi-sport letterman in HS. I recall a photo and little article in the Campus one year of then captain Rick Herrscher welcoming Meredith to the basketball team as a walk-on. That must have been after football was over that year. I don't think it lasted long and I don't believe Meredith saw the court in a game.

Yes I know. Different era. Different players. Different sports. Apples and oranges. Really an OT comment.

Anyone else remember that episode? Arkpony maybe?

My take is not so much that the new receiver can catch on and contribute as it is why people think a QB can catch on quickly but a receiver cannot.

But I do believe it is much easier for a receiver and I welcome him to the team.

I don't know how many have played college football and lacrosse. Another old memory, one likely shared by several, and certainly easily verified is that Jim Brown at Syracuse was an All American in both sports. One thing I learned about Brown when checking for this note was that Brown was a Georgian by birth.
