Optional opinionAnyone know if Tulane runs the option. If they do we are in for a long evening. I have never seen a team so inept at stopping the option. Not just against A$M but everyione who runs it against us. Absolutely pitiful. I knew Fran was going to run it down our throats. He did the same thing at TCU. Was this play a complete surprise to our players? No one seemed to know what to do. One guy would cover the QB but invariably the RB was wide open. That play was a sure 10 yards (if not longer) all day long. If TCU hadn't inexplicably only run the option a few times against us they might have had a lot more success. Here's my suggestion: Have someone cover the RB on the option. Just a hunch on my part that it might help. Yours in peace and love. Nacho.
The A&M line was outstanding. I think they deserve a lot of credit. In pass protection, they were tremendous. We had put a lot of heat on the QB in the first two games, but they did a great job of protecting the QB. They really controlled the line of scrimmage.
As far as the option is concerned, it was the option to the right that gave us the most problems. When it went out to the A&M left, Lee was there to take the QB, and McCray took the pitch and we handled it pretty well. The times we struggled most were option right. Lee didn't get over, and Nnabuife was forced to choose the pitch or the QB, and we gave up yards. One time he correctly chose QB and McNeal broke the tackle long. Another time, we took the pitch and McNeal kept it for his other long run. I think the problem most had to do with the fact that we had to blitz in order to get any pressure on the ball, so if it was a blitz up the middle, Lee was out of the play, so there was no cover on the outside. Against Rice we will be better off because we won't be blitzing up the middle. We will also most likely bring Sturdivant up to help out up the middle, so that Lee can flow to the outside earlier, or play a 4-4: carrington takes the fullback, Lee takes the QB, and another LB takes the pitch.
you can talk all you want about the option game but it was the passing game that really blew things out. I doubt many teams have passing threats at QB who can also run the option with about 4.4 elusive speed. That's why everybody in the country wanted McNeil as well as Vince Young. That's why recruiting matters.
--- McNeil has become a much better passer than at his days at Lufkin. And he seldom throws the Int. And the WR Schraeder ran past us like we were in slo'motion.
That was a hell of a throw that Mcneil made to Jay S. in the corner of the endzone. Perfect velocity and arc on that ball, gave the receiver just enough room to put one foot down in the back of the endzone. Great pass.
On that long run from McNeil for the TD, I swear I heard a sonic boom when he put it into second gear. He ran past everyone on the field once he got into space.
