USA Today Says Moody Beer a Success

Postby max the wonder dog » Sun Jun 22, 2014 4:40 pm

USA Today reports that beer sales at Moody netted "six figures" in 12 games and that beer will be available this fall at Ford.

"There's a revenue component to it, for sure, but it was part of the experience fans wanted. And we had zero alcohol-related arrests. We didn't see a spike in any type of behavioral issues. I understand why it's a topic that needs to be vetted, and it's not for everybody."

Guess there were no gun fights in the parking lots.

One thing that surprised me was that SMU allowed beer to be sold in clear plastic cups, as it's pretty easy to see on TV that kids are drinking. I wonder if they'll change to opaque cups this year

Translation:
Hyman: We are swimming in money and selling alcohol doesn't move the needle at all.
Hart: we need to dig up every possible source of revenue to make athletics work.

Good for SMU for taking the leap and proving that alcohol sales can be done in a responsible manner. Good for the fan base and students for validating that trust.

I think Ford will be more full if they can offer alcohol which brings the boulevard experience into the stadium.
Just think if - some year- we had a competitive team! Ford would be packed because it would be able to offer everything a pro venue can offer - Without the drive nor the multi thousands dollar commitment.

you have to give Rick Hart, Turner and our administration credit on this one. It would be really easy to have just done status quo on this one - and they decided to lead on this issue instead of hide behind the skirt of "its the way college sports is done".

It isn't just the money. Its how great everyone feels about the product - and lets face it - it got our students in there and raucous.

But what about the riots in the stands??

I thought it was great and the only issue is beer lines but who cares when you are grateful to at least have it. LIke it says in article, you have to compete in a "Pro-Sports" town. To me our games will be more fun that a Mavs game b/c it's a lot more intimate and NBA typically sux during the reg season.

I had no problem with the beer sales at Moody. Heck, I bought some. The only adjustment I would make is reducing the number of tabs for the students from 3 to 2. Now, they'll be creative and find a way to circumvent that. I'm sure SMU is in the midst of adjusting everything based on what it did for the 12 basketball games.

But as long as the majority of people learn how to handle this revenue concept the right way, this could be a financial windfall for the athletics department.

I would add one more kiosk with local craft beers.

But someone told the DMN that there would be gunfights in the bleachers!

They absolutely have to figure out a way to legally not have to pour from cans. I trust they will.

Poke another hole in the can. Will pour faster.

Why do they have to pour from cans as opposed to a keg?

After attracting a fantastic student section filled with loud, engaged people for the first time in many years... we're going to crack down on the students.

Awesome idea.
