Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)I'm still a little skeptical of Heupel as Head Coach. The things people seem to like about Heupel are the characteristics I look for in a Coordinator. Just like the Bennett mistake. The Job is so much bigger than X and Os especially at a school like SMU. Is he the guy you want to represent the university though. Will he hire the best staff. Is he a leader and can he inspire the alumni and players. I'm still trying to get a feel for that-but so far I'm not convinced. Someone show me something that convinces me.

Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)Stallion - I agree 100% with that. We need a leader, a great presence for SMU both with the DFW and the Alumni base. I once read an article about Stoops calling himself the CEO of OU football, just the way he set up his organization. The job of a great head coach is not to be a coordinator, but to hire good coordinators.
Hart knows a all this. I thinks he will get face to face with some really good people and figure who fits that bill. Both Stoops and Sumlin have a pretty good list of offensive coordinators that have been very effective. So just being one of those good coordinators is not enough.
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)
You do know both Stoops and Sumlin were coordinators before they were head coaches. #HammerDown
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)
All of this.
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)Mack Brown and Charlie Weis do NOT belong in the same catagory, especially from SMU's standpoint. Mack has been successful as a head coach at three different locations, has won a national championship, and is now a coaching icon within Texas, no matter how it ended up. Weis hasn't been a successful head coach at either school and there are questions as to whether he could be a great head coach. Brown at least deserves a look, if he wants it.
Hudspeth's name will stay hot for a few years regardless. ULL has stunk consistently and nobody is going to blame him for losing to the likes of Ole Miss and Boise. Another possible name to look at: Justin Fuente at Memphis. Early looks are that Fuente has cleaned up the dumpster fire that was Memphis under Porter and is heading in the right direction. Remember, he was a coordinator at TCU and we actually talked about him replacing June a couple of years ago.
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)With how much Hart emphasized keeping the search details quiet, and even the pay boards having little in the way of good info, I don't think we can trust any info. Are we really interviewing him? Who knows. Could be total diversion. could be a courtesy interview due to OU connections with Hart. Could already have a coach and interviewing Heupel as an OC.

Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)If I am Fuente I just laugh if you ask if I would leave Memphis for SMU.

Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)Tom Herman, Ohio State co-offensive coordinator: The Big Ten 2013 recruiter of the year has Big 12 ties to Texas (where he got his master's) and Iowa State. He was Paul Rhoads' offensive coordinator from 2009-11. The Cyclones were 18-20 in those years. They're 10-19 since.

Only out of elation.
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)Once Hart has zeroed in on a candidate, the first question will be for the coach to identify his staff and the salaries they will need to come to SMU.
I'm not sure. Heupel or Spavital aged co- ordinator has the chops to attract a great staff. See Kliff at TTU. The staff is full of 30 year olds . No experience and the result is a defense that is awful and an undisciplined team. Butch Davis. Has local cred from his Cowboy days, successful NFL and College coach who can put together a staf that will recruit and coach. Assistants will join Butch because they know he can get them placed if things go south. The Heupel / Spavital types can't do that. He is the closest thing to a football LB that we will find. He was trashed at UNC and I think he wants redemption. Pony 81
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)
Why make a lateral move to a program in turmoil from one that is on an upturn due to his work? And don't say money because they can Fedex him all he needs. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)The Tech defensive problems really relate to recruiting mistakes made in the past. That's why they signed 5 JUCO DLM. Arkansas was the nitemare opponent

That why Tubervile got out of there because he knew what he had recruited. Now KK has to try to rebuild the mess Tuberville left. #HammerDown
Re: Rate the Coaching Candidates (September Edition)
Fair question. FedEx isn't behind the University of Memphis's football team - all you have to do is drive by the school and it's football facilities and you'll see that. Fred Smith tried to help the school when his son Conner was with the football team but he isn't there anymore and while there is some support for the school itself the football team is on its own. - The budget for Memphis football is woefully behind considering its potential. - Commuter basketball school - Yes Money. SMU WILL pay more for a coach if they want him. - I'm from Memphis. Dallas >>>>> Memphis I'd argue UM has the biggest upside potential of any program in the country. But until they get off their duffs and make it happen they will always be bigger-better-dealed. Again, there is a reason about the time we had a hot coach come to us and say they would take our job they went with a graduate who was known as a recruiter and had no head coach or coordinator experience (Porter).
