what happened with Tom Rossley?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: what happened with Tom Rossley? The question is this: is there enough value in paying Rossely based on the team performing a little better might attract a better coach?
I would suggest the answer is yes. A little disappointing to me, and it makes me wonder a little if the money is really there to invest in a proper strength program and strong assistants to go along with the head coach.
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?
I doubt firing Morrison and Phillips now would save any money. They are not on week to week contracts.
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?
I would say the answer is "No". Improving the results of this season isn't going to make a bit of difference in the coaching search. What will matter is how much we offer, what we're willing to commit to providing (IPF, additional recruiting budget, etc), and whether a coach considers SMU a risk worth taking based on the first two criteria. Every coach in the country knows this program is a dumpster fire right now... improving to 4 or 5 wins from the 1 or 2 we might win isn't going to change that fact.
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley? This is what I would expect from RGT....he is an Ulcer on our football program. Can we start a search for a new President now as well? Bring Rossley in too help, the amount can't have been that extreme and we need to salvage as much as the season as we can for future recruits, coaches, the current players, the fanbase, the big money donors, etc.

Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?
There's a lot to criticize Turner for but... sorry... not going to get upset over not wanting to waste more money on a season that isn't going to be salvaged.
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley? There's also more to a president's job than football
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?
Since no one knows what Rossley asked for or was offered how can anyone make an intelligent judgement. For example if Rossley asked for $9,000 and SMU countered with $3,000 then I can understand why you feel the way you do. On the other hand, if Rossley asked for $900,000 and SMU countered with $300,000 then you might not feel the same. Personally, I think Rossley would add very little value. He would not be replacing any coach and as a consultant would not be able to influence the offense very much. Perhaps he could help Mason evaluate some players, but I don't think that is worth very much. Furthermore it would give Morrison and Phillips someone to blame for their failures.
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?I'm sure there is more to the story. If the money wasn't outrageous, I think they should have spent the money to bring him in. I would like to ditch this offense in its entirety, but we are stuck for another 90 days. Given that, spending the money tells the few remaining fans that the school is doing everything it can and it tells the players (and their parents) that the school wants them to be successful.

Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?
Like making SMU competitive with Duke or USC or the law program better than the law school program at the University of Alabama? Failed that too.

I agree with Reb. #HammerDown
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?
I respectfully disagree. Looking at it from a recruit's standpoint, joining a team that is 6-6 or 4-8 is much more appealing than 0-12. Selling the idea that you could be the difference maker on a 6-6 team is easier than thinking you and a few other recruits in your class could turn the whole thing around. Same thing hold true from a potential head coach candidate's position. Even with June stepping down, which needed to happen, there's no scenario where not improving or not winning is positive IMHO. Re: what happened with Tom Rossley? That and I just want my team to have a better chance of winning. Losing sucks.
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?since they are going to clean house anyway and the season is 1/3 over not much need for consultant to tell you to clean house.
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?
I made some phone calls today and my sources tell me Coach Rossley was only asking for $30K....he would have had to move back to Dallas for the rest of the season from the Hill Country.... so $30K is very reasonable to finish out the season. Mason is the one that reached out to Coach Rossley... but Turner offered $10K and would not budge a dime. C-ya @ Milos!
Re: what happened with Tom Rossley?I know there is no way to prove it but I would bet my retirement that having Rossley as a consultant would not give us 6 wins. Or even 4. Also, we will not be getting any new recruits, at least of substance until a new staff is in place. All Rossley could do is transition us from the run and shoot ( which he also used) to a different offense and with luck we might catch on by Uconn to stop a 0-12 season.
