What's the statute of limitations...

Postby Houston Pony » Tue Oct 04, 2005 6:21 pm

As far as age and eligibility?
I ask, because I know a pair of brothers (Last name rhymes with "Jugg" or "Thugg") who graduated from SMU, ages 27 and 29, but never actually suited up and played a sport.
One is 6-7, weighs 250, and has good hands and decent foot speed. Would make a great tight end. He kind of looks like Ivan Drago and Dawber Dawbinsky's lovechild.
The other is 6-6, around 275, and could probably bulk up a bit and play guard or center. Think John Goodman's character in the "Big Lebowsky".
They're both smart guys, have real-world experience, and have expressed an interest in helping out our beloved 'Stangs. Too late for this season, sure, but I've seen these guys in a barfight, and you don't wanna mess with them.
One of them has even thrown a trident through another man's heart. He had to lay low for a few days after that one.
Do these guys still have a chance, theoretically, to contribute?

Definitely sure.
One of them even wrestled semi-professionally in western Kentucky a few years ago.

If you went to college, the clock starts. You have 5 years to play 4. Period (except RS Medical exception). Unless they graduated in 3 years, don't count on any eligibility left...

Actually, there are 2 things that can stop the clock, military service, or a religous obligation (Mormon church mission). Otherwise, you're correct, its 5 years to play 4, and the clock starts ticking when you enroll fulltime at a 4-year D1 school. The clock doesnt stop at graduation, 5 years after you first enrolled, you can no longer play at a Division 1 school. Lower divisions have looser restrictions.

If your buddies are 27 and 29, and didnt spend that time in the Marine Corp or Navy, then they are way, way past being able to return.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.

What if one of them spent about 6 weeks lurking around the Coast Guard recruiting office at the mall, drinking Slurpees and wolfing down Cinnabon?

Then extend the five years by those six weeks.

Would it've helped their presidential hopes if they'd snorted them?
