Last week's bye week meant the start of the college playing career of Keyfer Roberts, a 6-3, 282-pound guard from Midlothian, Texas, who spent last season at the Naval Academy Preperatory School in Newport, R.I.
Roberts, who played his high school football at Trinity Christian Academy-Cedar Hill, said he intended to go from Newport to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. But surgery to remove screws in his right knee from a previous operation meant that he couldn't enroll at Navy until after "Plebe Summer," the summer training program which is required of all incoming freshmen to the Naval Academy, so he ended up returning to attend school and play closer to home.
"I would have been working out with (the Mustangs) over the summer, but I wasn't cleared by the doctors yet," Roberts said. "So I worked out on my own, rehabbing."
Roberts is a walk-on and said he expects to redshirt the rest of the 2014 season while learning the SMU offense and blocking scheme.
"At (Naval Prep), we ran the ball, a lot like they do (in Annapolis)," he said. "So that was all of our focus — running or play-action. I assume with seven games left, I'll redshirt while I get used to pass blocking again, which we did in high school, and then be ready to go in the spring."

Maybe the surgery was to put in 4" spacers. 80 lbs is a lot for that time frame!

That should be the same guy, although the player with whom I spoke looks a lot older than that. Assuming it has to be the same guy, it raises the question of how old that picture is.
That being said, I'm a hair under 6-2, and I was look up at him, and the 282 he quoted me didn't seem that far out of bounds, at least by the eyeball test.

Did he have red hair? Either way glad to have him.

Hair is pretty short, and if not red, it's at least reddish-brown. Has to be the same guy.
