Why are the private schools typically more than publics? Do the publics have cheaper facilities? Austin has generally more expensive real estate than Dallas (but not the Park Cities).

I'd better start salting away some 529 Plan money.

Question: How much do apartments in the Village rent for these days? Wouldn't it be cheaper to live off campus and get groceries at Tom Thumb?

IF I had known how much daycare would cost, I would have started contributing to a 529 plan decades ago. Daycare tuition for my 1 year old costs more than I paid for SMU including Room/Board/Fratenity Dues/Beer/Bail.

Starting with this class of first year students, all students will be required to live in on-campus housing for two years (unless granted exception - If their parents are close to home, they are over the age of 20, a veteran, have a family, etc.). Part of the two year live on requirement is that students can live in their affiliated house (either fraternity or sorority) IF the house has been certified. Important to note: certification is on the house, not the student.

The certification process will mostly mirror the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life Pillars of Excellence Program and will go from December to November. If a fraternity or sorority house does not meet requirements then they will not be able to house sophomore students and those students will live in other on-campus housing instead.

If you have been by the campus we are adding an additional 1250 new beds to accommodate both first and second year students. The new buildings that are a part of the Residential Commons are located behind the bookstore and in front of the Dedman Rec Center. We are increasing our housing accommodations, but we are also increasing our amount of people we are required to house - so this will still only allow limited space for upperclass students.

I hope we see more upperclass fraternity men living so they can be more of a positive influence for their younger, developing brothers. SMU is ever-changing!
