SMU beats the clock, UAB, 28-27

10:18 PM CDT on Saturday, October 8, 2005

Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bobby Chase caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Jerad Romo as time expired to give SMU a stunning 28-27 victory over UAB Saturday night.

UAB led 27-22 when the Blazers Parker Mullins punted into the end zone to give SMU the ball on its own 20-yard-line with 22 seconds left.

Romo completed a 20-yard pass to Chase, an 8-yarder to DeMyron Martin and 19-yarder to Reynaldo Pellerin. That put the Mustangs on the UAB 31-yard line with three seconds to play.

As the final seconds ticked off, Romo lofted a pass toward the left corner of the end zone. UAB had several defenders in the area, but Chase came down with the ball for the touchdown.

SMU players stormed the field in celebration, while several UAB players fell to the turf in disbelief. SMU took a knee on the extra point, with no time left on the clock.

SMU (2-4, 1-2 Conference USA) had a fourth and four at it's own 39 with 2:16 left. Romo completed a pass to Blake Warren, but the play gained only 3 yards and gave UAB the ball at the SMU 42.

SMU called it's final timeout with two minutes to play, so UAB only needed one first down to seal the win. But three runs by Burks netted only 5 yards and Mullins' punt into the end zone set up SMU's frantic game-winning drive.

UAB (3-2, 1-1 Conference USA) had taken a 27-22 lead when Dan Burks scored on a 13-yard run with 3:38 left in the game.

Romo completed 30 of 43 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns. Chase had five catches for 82 yards to lead SMU receivers.

Martin was SMU's leading rusher with 72 yards on 10 carries.

Darrell Hackney completed 22-of-35 passes for 344 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead UAB. He threw touchdown passes of 89 and 50 yards to Reggie Lindsey. Lindsey finished with 8 catches for 184 yards.

UAB lost a battle it had been winning all season. The Blazers entered the game leading the nation in turnover margin with 12 take aways and only two give aways. But UAB turned the ball over three times against SMU, while getting only one turnover. Safety Joe Sturdivant had two interceptions and one fumble recovery for SMU.

Wish the volleyball loss to Rice wasn't trumping the football win

We took a knee on the extra point after time expired? Don't you just win after going ahead with no time on the clock?

Only in overtime. There's a chance the defense could recover fumble, etc. and score.

is that really the correct call that you have to try the PAT after scoring on the last play with no time. I just don't ever remember that ever being the case. Never seen that.

Oo who was it..*thinks*...Leander and SA Marshall I think it was? But it was in overtime. dont ask me why they did it...but they did...but the points didn't count (WTF).

yes, it is the right call. a blocked PAT run back for a score by the defense is 2 points for the D and would have cost us the game.

It didn't -- the real game story (by Calvin Watkins) apparently wasn't done yet. It's up there now.

only when there's a chance of the win or tie for the other team. If UAB runs it back they win it in this case
