Gonzaga lost 2 key starters from last years team that went 29-7, and went undefeated on their home court. David Stockton lead the team in assists with 152, and Ben Dower was the teams leading rebounder (7.2 rpg), and 2nd in points (14.4 ppg). Two transfers who sat out last season will fill in immediately to plug the holes, and they may make the Zags even better than they were last year. Byron Wesley is a 6’4” shooting guard who lead USC in scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg) his junior year with the Trojans, and he will start in the backcourt alongside returnees Kevin Pangos (14.4 ppg) and Gary Bell (11 ppg). Pangos lead the Zags in scoring last year, and also in minutes played, by a wide margin. To a casual viewer it may seem like Pangos never leaves the court, he has started 104 of Gonzagas 105 games in his career. In their season opening rout of sacramento State, Pangos had 16 points, Wesley had 12, and Bell scored 11. Gonzaga’s other transfer, 6’10 forward Kyle Wiltjer, lead all scorers with 18 against Sac State, and was 3/5 from 3 point range. Wiltjer comes to Gonzaga from Kentucky, where he averaged 10 ppg before transferring. The zags 5th starter will be 7’1” center Przemek Karnowski, who averaged 10.4 points and 7 rebounds as a sophomore, and depth on the front line will probably come from 6’10” freshman Domatas Sabonis, Sabonis had 14 points and 8 rebounds in his first college game against Sac State, and is the son of former NBA Hall of Famer Arvydis Sabonis. The first sub in the backcout will likely be sophomore Kyle Draganis, who started 6 games last year while Bell was injured, or freshman Josh Perkins, who had 8 points and 6 assists in 27 minutes of court time against Sacramento.

Gonzaga is a fairly complete team, they have size, athleticism, perimeter shooters, and a strong home court advantage. The Zags are 136-8 at home since the opening of the McCarthey Center, are currently on a 26 game winning streak at home. Gonzaga was picked to win the WCC title again this year, this would be their 14th conference championship in the last 15 years.

Geez, they sound complete at all positions. I am concerned about boards and 3 pointers.

If we can't keep them out of the paint, I am worried.

sounds like this game will show how much we will miss kenndey. they are a big team. we may have to use ben moore, yanick and cannan together more than we would like.

Great opportunity to shock the world! (and all home court winning streaks eventually come to an end - tonight is as good a night as any other).

I'm less concerned about our interior defense as our perimeter defense. We HAVE to defend the 3 ball better than I've seen us in the LB era (one of our very few weaknesses IMHO). Great opportunity here to show improvement there. Also, have to crash the boards better of course.

I'd start this lineup:

Nic
JMart
B Moore
Cannen
Yanick

Heaving doses of Sterling and BenE (although due to JMart being out, LB might flip this with BenE starting and JMart sitting . . . I "worry" though that he starts KF . . . I like KF a lot, I just think he shouldn't be starting just yet - gives good energy off the bench right now IMHO).

Villanova, Gonzaga, Kentucky and Arizona will make the Final Four

Last year in the preseason, I picked Harvard to make the Final Four, and everyone went nuts. My point was simply that I expected some unexpected team to get to a national semifinal because, well, in non-2008 tournaments, some unexpected team usually does so.

And I was right! Well, except for the "Harvard" part. Connecticut won the national title as a No. 7 seed, and Kentucky got to the season's final 40 minutes from the No. 8 line. I call that unexpected, but apparently the custom with these preseason picks is to parrot your top four teams from your national rankings or something close to it.

Fair enough, I've learned my lesson. Here are four teams that will all have excellent chances of making the Final Four....

• Villanova: See "coach of the year," above. Wright has a perimeter-oriented rotation that can both defend the rim and force turnovers. In other words, the Wildcats are the team version of a matchup nightmare. I also expect that Darrun Hilliard will finally get the attention he deserves, quite possibly as the Big East POY.

• Gonzaga: The Bulldogs are the perfect example of a team that is confidently and universally classified as unable to mount a deep tournament run -- until it does. This could be the year for Few's men. A nucleus comprising Kevin Pangos, Gary Bell Jr., Kyle Wiltjer and Przemek Karnowski promises to be close to ideal in terms of inside-outside balance on offense. And the depth is significant.

• Kentucky: To repeat a belief I've voiced just in the past few days, UK projects to be fiendishly dominant on the offensive glass and brutally effective in the paint on defense. I certainly don't expect Calipari's men to be lights-out from the perimeter, but those other two virtues will serve both of the coach's platoons very well.

• Arizona: See "national championship," below.

Three of these four teams share a common nickname, so expect wacky headlines accordingly -- "WILDCAT STRIKE," perhaps. And if instead of Gonzaga it turns out that Northwestern joins those other three, the mascot convergence will be truly awe-inspiring.

Great, I can see it now: "Gasaway Picks Northwestern to Make Final Four!" Not true. Step away from the torch and pitchfork.

Possible? Yes. Likely? No. Anything is possible, which is why we play the games. We won't get all of the slop buckets and tip-ins we got against Lamar. This is one game where not having MK is going to hurt.

I think we can. Our saving grace is that we defend like friken junk yard dogs, which can keep us in virtually every game.

My biggest concern tonight is cleaning up on the defensive glass. With all of their height up front (I don't include Kyle W because he is more a stretch 4/5 who hangs on the perimeter), we've got to be in good positions to get rebs and limit easy points/extended possessions.

Some may disagree, but I think we should slowwwwwwwww the pace to a grind-out pace to limit possessions. While I don't have complete faith in our half-court offense, I do have faith in our defensive ability to limit buckets.
