Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work withModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work withRandy Rodgers â€@rodgersrecruit 4m4 minutes ago
congratulations to SMU on a great hire in Chad Morris. bet you see SMU coaches in DFW high schools as soon as he gets staff hired. #HammerDown
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work withStars and offers don't mean squat very long. I can think of three transfers June grabbed that couldn't play a lick despite their many stars/offers. How many stars did Beasley, Margus, or even BLM have?
Next year, we are going to see a coach who builds his game plan around what his players can do - not what they can't. If our QB is Davis, we will run early and often. If it is Burcham/Severt/Kearns, less so. We could see Davis /Colbert playing WR/QB in Wildcat formations. Look for guys like Lagasse to end up in new positions. Little Prime Time can play a bit, bet Morris uses him as a scat back. Gaines will be hammering CBs on run plays and out jumping them on passing plays. Mr Halverson might be effective on the Fly Sweep. If not, Lancaster is up. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
What did they win here again and how many stars did all of these 0-12 players have? They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
The list was stupid because you refuse to understand scholarship limits and because it included walk-ons. Austin Kent was a walk on who left the team months ago. At most, we will have 25 scholarships to give. With kids leaving the team voluntarily, there will be little need to cut guys who are willing to buy into what Morris is selling. Assuming 5 want to leave, that leaves only 5 cuts. For the most part, they will be malcontents, druggies, and grade problems. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
Severt is literally a clone of Gilbert. Nearly identical size and similar athletic ability. Morris, being very, very familiar with Gilbert and his skills, should be able to make a quick evaluation of Severt to determine whether or not he warrants reps in his scheme.
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work withI expect 4-5 wins next year with plenty of fireworks on offense but a dreadful defense that will not allow us to keep up with the rest of the schedule unfortunately.
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
Exactly! For all those talking about nonsensical roster purging and 'cutting' players it's not going to happen. Hart had a meeting weeks ago, thanked the players for hanging in through the difficult times, and told them flat out that anyone who wanted to be a part of the team going forward would be welcomed back. He knows exactly who the malcontents, drug test failures, and grade problems are. As well as Hart has handled this, he has probably already been over the roster with Morris and assured him he would have his full compliment of 25 scholarships available based on the current makeup of the roster and those he already knows will not be invited back because of drug and grade issues. Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
I remember Margus winning a Bowl game for us by making the other team's right tackle curl up in a fetal position. How many games did he win by blocking kicks? Boise State is in the Top 25 again. While they got 2 4 stars last year, their team is full of 2-3 star players. Their starting QB had 1 offer. The difference: Boise State runs a modern offense and knows how to maximize production from players. June did neither. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
I beg to differ offers do mean something. I don't care how good of a coach you are or how good a system you have if you don't have enough talent to run it you will not succeed very often. As Nick Saban said that it does make a difference what system you run as long as you have the players. June proved that right with all the no offer players that he got. #HammerDown
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
Severt had exactly zero offers except SMU out of high school. Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
Stop the foolishness. Boise is in a weak conference and got destroyed by my Ole Miss Rebels. By the way, The Ole Miss Rebels have 4 and 5 star recruits on their roster and players that have multiple BCS offers. Also if your theory is correct you should be able to name a bunch of teams other than Boise. Several teams that don't win run modern offense like Tulsa and many MAC teams etc. Recruiting diamonds in the rough is what got us in this mess in the first place. Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
Next year's team won't have the talent to beat Bama, but it will have the talent to compete with UNT and most AAC teams. Heck. With a modern offense, this team could have beaten UNT, Uconn, USF, Tulsa, and Houston. The bottom line: most of our roster will be back. It is simple math. Morris will deal with it like a Strong dealt with it at UT - over time. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work withBottom line is that June's teams stopped winning when the talent level went down. They were going to bowl games with Junes offense but once the talent level dropped we could have been running the best offensive system in the world and not won.

Luckily, we are in the AAC for a while. While he IPROVES the talent, we don't have to lose every game like this year. Btw - if Morris finds 20-25 4-5 star recruits willing to come to SMU next year, I am for it. But, I won't hold my breath. More likely outcome: he adds 10-15 3-4 star players to our current commits. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Roster Analysis - What Morris has to work with
The question was whether Severt was a runner or not? Had nothing to do with stars or offers. 100% confident Morris will be able to make a quick & accurate evaluation of Severt, especially with his history with Gilbert. With his high school connections, he'll probably go one step further and call Severt's high school coach to get feedback and assess his leadership skills and mental makeup. I think Severt at least makes the top group of 3 or 4 who can run the Morris scheme if called upon. Unfortunately there are 3 or 4 others on the roster who have absolutely no chance, so it'll be interesting to see how Morris handles it.
