Re: Per Report - OK State D Coordinator Bill Young to SMUWill him and Van share that title or is he taking a step back?
Re: Per Report - OK State D Coordinator Bill Young to SMUHuh. That seems odd.
A) We already have Van Malone (reportedly as DC) B) Even if he was being hired for DC, why would he take a lateral move to SMU? "[College] referees couldn't manage a White Castle." -Mark Cuban
Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young tohe's no longer at Ok St...he was the head coach of Yukon HS this year.
Seems to me he'll advise Malone on the x's and o's and serve as a mentor of sorts
Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young toNo idea...I'm not seeing confirmation about the "hiring" by any SMU-related source.
Young has an impressive resume though - took the Cowboys D from #93 to #31 in his first year.
Re: Per Report - OK State D Coordinator Bill Young to SMU
Not a lateral move. Bill is currently the head football coach at Yukon High School in Oklahoma. He took that job this year after a year away from the college game. I think he thought he could come into the high school ranks and school everybody, but he ended up getting pounded week in and week out. Not really his fault. Yukon hasn't been a good program for quite some time.
Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young toBrings a ton of experience!
1980-84 Tulsa Defensive Line/ Defensive Coordinator 1985-87 Arizona State Defensive Line 1988-95 Ohio State Defensive Coordinator 1996-97 Oklahoma Defensive Coordinator 1998-00 USC Defensive Coordinator 2001 Detroit Lions Defensive Line 2002-07 Kansas Defensive Coordinator 2008 Miami (Fl) Defensive Coordinator 2009-2012 Oklahoma State Defensive Coordinator 2013 Wyoming Defensive Assistant 2014-present Yukon High School Head Coach and at 68 years old, he'll help raise our coaching age average!
Re: Per Report - OK State D Coordinator Bill Young to SMU
That's my fault...in my excitement I forgot to add "Former" OK State D Coordinator. Fixed now ![]()
Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young toReads like he thought JJ was still the coach.

Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young to
If true, it is a great hire. I was worried that we didn't have an experienced hand on the defensive side. BTW - does he have any National Championship rings from USC, Ohio State, or Miami? Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young toI actually kind of like having one older, experienced coach on the staff for the younger guys to use as a resource.
SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs
Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young toSeems like a waste of a spot unless he's going to be running the defense.

Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young to
Why? We have plenty of young, aggressive guys out recruiting. When Malone is in charge of the game planning for the first time in his career, having a guy like Young around to bounce ideas off is smart. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young to
So he's a glorified consultant? We had plenty of those on the last staff. Either this guy calls the defense or it's a waste of a spot (unless he plans to be incredibly active on the recruiting trail at age 68). They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Per Report - Former OK State D Coordinator Bill Young toAnybody been named as "Assistant Head Coach" yet? If not, Bill could fit well in that spot. At some point, you need some experience on staff. If not, there will be things overlooked. Look at Kingsbury's staff at Tech. Young, active, and energetic, but too unorganized and too many things not being taken care of. Not worth being able to say "but look at all of the energy they have on the sideline..." Young could be a good hire if he still has some fire left in him. If that happens, I bet he and Archie both coach the DL. One will have the ends, and the other one will have the inside guys. That's how Bill had it set up when he was at Okie State.
