So lets just lower standard, create special classes and in general do whatever it takes to have a national title / great athletics because clearly that is most important to some alumni.

You said you wanted to be like Stanford - great academics and great athletics. This is how they do it.

No it isn't-this is the 2nd time I've seen that [deleted] posted on here. Do any of you actually follow Stanford football recruiting because there is no way you could and claim that they do things like SMU or other schools that recruit minimum qualifiers. I know of no metric that doesn't establish that Stanford runs an exemplary program-perhaps the best in the country

stanford's academic bar is MILES above SMU for the general student population. clearly they relax their academic requirements to get athletes there. either that or they've found a goldmine of the smartest damn athletes that I've ever heard of.

the fact of the matter is that 100 or so football + basketball players have absolutely no impact on the overall level of academia at a university. you are talking about 1% or less of the population. I guarantee there is at least 1% of other non athlete students who don't deserve to be there but happen to have money, political ties or other things that get them admission when they otherwise wouldn't. It is just asinine to say, well I want SMU to be good at academics so let's not let these guys in.

Stanford 's academic standard for football players is miles and miles above SMU. There are many quotes from disappointed football and basketball recruits who were offered by Stanford coaches but denied admission with 3.6 GPAs through even a 4.0 GPA-heck I remember like 3 kids SMU was recruiting alone. .

Well SMU has no academic standards for football players from what I can tell, so sure I believe that.

interesting. being a 2 star recruit probably didn't help him out, but you'd still think admissions would work with the football staff.

at any rate, I stand by my argument that academic requirements for football and basketball are a joke and if SMU wants to be competitive they should drop the charade and let them in if they qualify (no evidence that they don't do that now). maybe stanford can get away with this, but we sure as hell cant.

Back in the day I know Rice and Stanford lowered their SAT requirement for athletes to 1100, but not quite minimum standards. BTW, at that point in time SMU's average SAT was around 1080, the problem was that our SAT for athletes was about 1080 as well.

This reminds me, I got recruited by Yale in soccer. The coach wanted me very badly. I was kind of excited. I went thru the admissions process and didn't get in.

It worked out well tho - the girls were much better looking and more fun at SMU.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
