Spencer Tillman Says OU Down Because of Academic Restriction

Postby Stallion » Wed Jan 07, 2015 9:26 pm

To his credit Stoops admits Tillman doesn't know what he is talking about. Mexmustang=Spencer Tillman. I really think half the people making these claims at all kinds of schools like A&M, UT, Baylor, TCU (believe me they ALL claim they have tougher restrictions) don't understand the new academic requirements and framework imposed by the NCAA. the GPA/SAT sliding scale, APR, Academic Progress Toward Degree and how different NCAA rules affect different programs in unique ways. Its not 1980 any more and its going to be even tougher starting with 2016 class

That is just hilarious when OU is under the same basic rules as everybody else.

It is amazing how many uninformed people there are on the new rules.

Great insight RT @Jordan_Esco: Spencer Tillman just suggested OU hire Chad Morris as their OC. No, seriously.

Now to be fair, reading at a third grade level ain't what it used to be. I see the homework my daughter brings home and it probably qualifies as grad-level work at OU

Considering OU freshmen have a higher average ACT score than UT freshmen, you may be a little off on this. OSU, maybe.

Maybe I am aging myself, but why would anyone take the ACT instead of the SAT?

Most schools take either. ACT is more common with southern schools. I never took the SAT and applied to a handful of schools (however, none were Ivy League )

Played at OU. Then played for the Oilers, generally backing up Lorenzo White. Decent player.

Then became a sportscaster in Houston. Not sure what he's up to now, other than spouting nonsense.

Comes down to what you're good at. ACT is a pretty easy test. Straight forward no tricks and no points off for missing. SAT is more of a logical based test that does knock off points for wrong answers (or at least that was the format when I took it) I had to take both in order to get the written section of the test for applications (ACT didn't offer yet when I took). Also ACT is more common in Midwest/South, SAT is more of a coast test.

In case you're wondering the difference is: My scores way back in the day: ACT 30, SAT New. 1650 Which according to the college board: SAT Old 1120 or the same as a ACT 24 I'm not good at "logical" tests

Well, Stallion, as usual you never go behind the print...you really believe the Head Football Coach at OU would not publicly state his academics are clean and do not a pose a problem unless he has already found a way to circumvent them?

"No matter how high you raise the grade point average, athletes, their handlers and athletic directors at big-time programs will find nefarious ways of getting them eligible at any campus," said Gerald Gurney, a former president of the National Association for Academic Advisors for Athletics and Associate Athletic Director for Academics at the University of Oklahoma, where he is now a professor. He continues:

"By consistently simply asserting the GSR "more accurately assesses the academic success" of college athletes and steadfastly referring to GSR rates, NCAA members have convinced the media to almost exclusively use the new, more-favorable metric. Intentionally or not, the NCAA's APR and GSR metrics confuse the media, fans and the general public. Using the GSR and APR to tout graduation success and increased academic standards is undoubtedly savvy marketing and public relations, but these metrics are fundamentally nothing more than measures of how successful athletic departments are at keeping athletes eligible, and have increasingly fostered acts of academic dishonesty and devalued higher education in a frantic search for eligibility and retention points.
In a now established, high-minded annual ritual the NCAA announces the academic pariahs who have failed to live up to the association's commitment to education. What is readily apparent when this roll call is announced is that in today's big-time free-market college sports world, the NCAA -- in the name of increased academic standards -- sacrifices (non P-5) schools like Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Hampton and Jacksonville State in order to protect its core brands: March Madness and the next iteration of the Bowl Championship Series."

Just who do you believe? Two opinions, same school!

So basically there is not an issue getting kids into school anywhere and keeping them eligible is not a problem? Thanks for sorting that out for us. Case closed, go back into hiding, June apologist.
