What makes them good is they have found a way to get great up and coming coaches, write favorable contracts so that when they leave they can use the buyout to help fund the next guy.

Nolan Richardson, Bill Self, Danny Manning in BBall. They don't throw around big contracts.

SMU hasn't been able to find quality coaches until LB and we hope Chad despite paying top dollar.

This guy did a pretty interesting (though not really surprising) analysis of 20 years worth of NBA picks. 70% of the guys taken with the first pick of the second round were bench fillers or straight cuts, and it goes generally down hill from there. The NBA really only needs about 20-25 new players every year.
