Mustang Swimming And Diving Teams Repeat As Scholar All-America Squads
SMU Men Place In Top 10 Of All Division I

June 30, 2015

DALLAS (CSCAA/SMU) – The SMU men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs were named 2015 Spring Scholar All-America programs, with the men’s team breaking into the top 10 of all Division I men’s programs. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America announced the award winners on Tuesday.

The Mustang men posted a 3.42 grade point average during the spring semester placing them behind only six teams out of 92 men’s programs honored. On the women’s side, SMU posted a 3.46 and was one of 172 teams earning recognition. Both teams improved their GPA’s from the fall semester.

To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the spring semester.

The CSCAA will also recognize individual student-athletes as Scholar All-Americans for their performances in the classroom and competition at a later date.

After mid-terms in the fall of my sophomore year (1964 ) legendary coach A.R. "Red" Barr called me into his office along with 2 other swimmers. In his fatherly manner he explained that the swim team ( no women's team at the time ) had a tradition of having the highest GPA ( roughly 3.4 ) of all groups and organizations on campus and that was a tradition of which he was very proud and intended to continue. It appears that the 3 of us were not performing up to his expectations ( I was carrying 19 credits that semester ) and that we needed to improve our academic performances. ( Coach Barr had an incredible network of professors who kept him posted on all swimmers, their class attendance and performance. He would know your grades before you.) As result, we were to report to his office at 5:30 AM every morning with our books and study rather than work out with the rest of the team. After 3 weeks he had made an indelible impression as to his expectations, his regard for our academic well being and the academic tradition of the team. I never had less than a 3.5 GPA thereafter and never forgot the lesson.
