DiamondM wrote:While recognizing that he was part of the Pony Express, my reason for disliking Craig James has to do with the fact that when he had a microphone and a national spotlight, he was not only NOT using it to help SMU, but openly using it to undermine and make fun of SMU. Repeatedly, on multiple broadcasts. Boston College hasn't exactly been lighting it up, but Doug Flutie was never bad mouthing his alma mater (and was not involved in the era that brought the institution down in the first place).
I also believe he charged appearance fees for SMU events (like the Conference USA announcement way back when).
If someone can assure me with factual evidence that he is making big donations to help SMU athletics, or otherwise assisting his alma mater in meaningful ways, then perhaps I can forgive him. Then I will only have to hold my nose at his politics.
This.

Craig James was openly undermining and criticizing an incompetent, non-competitive athletic Model that ALL SMU FANS should have criticizing since 1989. He had SMU's best athletic interest in mind-as shown by the FACT that all non-competitive policies of the university have been eradicated. My only question is why so many SMU fans laid over for two decades that destroyed our athletic program

Craig will always be one of my favorite Mustangs on the field. Off the field, not so much. I understand that he has strong religious beliefs, and that is fine, but he is tied in with a religious group that is extremely political and alienate me. To me they are pretty extreme in some of their pronouncements. I don't know if he should lose his job over that. I wouldn't have hired him in the first place because he is just not palatable as a broadcster. He annoyed me even before I knew his politics. I have no idea of the terms of his recent broadcast contract. He may have a legitimate claim against the employer.
There is a broadcaster named Ron Thulin who has broadcast a number of SMU games over the last several years. I last saw him on TBS. This guy has a call-in talk show on a San Antonio radio station and his political views make Craig look like Bernie Sanders. Does anyone know if Thulin is still on the air? He wasn't a great broadcaster but he was as good as many of the other play by play guys on the air. It would be a shame if he lost his job over his politics although they scare me a bit.

I have never understood how everyone sided with Mike Leach on the Tech incident. Mike Leach is generally regarded as the biggest nut job in D1. Its not like Craig James had a beef with John Wooden or something.

They sided with him because Leach was a very popular CFB coach at the time.

CJ was a great player at SMU. He made the effort to come back and get his degree. He was constantly referred to as Pony Express. As the old saying goes, any pub is good pub. Yeah, he's right wing, so are half the people on this board. If you're liberal and hate his views, fine, but he has as much a right to them as you do to yours. So, to the Commies on this board who hate Craig James, lets focus on the real enemy. Those purple frog people in Ft. Worth.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I don't get it. I don't know him personally, but I certain appreciate the fun games he, and his teammates, provided me to watch.

Distinctly remember James being a rare SMU voice that called out a crap AD and terrible support and coaching. He expected more out of the school and players...much like other SMU players of that generation...a level of effort on and off the field that matched what they feel they brought to the program. I have no problem with that. He was there when we seemed to be moving up several years back...and has not been negative recently that I have heard.
So he is outspoken...so what.
And so what that TCU seems to pull this one out again. What the hell else are they going to pull out about us recently? We killed them in the 70's and 80's, right? Well, ELO and Gary Glitter killed it in the 70's too. How about we continue to redeem the program and support the team and prepare for a great game and let that be it. Hate to brake it to some of you...but TCU is our biggest rivalry game and it is our super bowl. We beat TCU and go 5-7 and miss a bowl and we are happy. Beating TCU is bigger than beating any other team on our schedule. Sounds like the SB for us?!? So it is...embrace it. Let's keep narrowing the divide and get it back to where it belongs...where it hasn't been for 30 years.

Love CJ! Love his conservatism. Love that he felt strongly enough about what we were screwing up to let it be know.

See Stallion's post above. If you participated since the late 70's thru the present, you lived it for a long time. Complete ineptitude and indifference.
