Wow, a whole month. Bottom line, it was reported. Was it not self reported? Compared to twenty for UNC and a whole decade for Syracuse. SMU is clean, at least to a whole bunch a institutions out there and has been artificially so because of the NCAA. The NCAA has kept SMU from competing for 30 years, why would that change now?

Yes, it was self reported from what was said on this board. It was also said that when SMU Compliance reported it that the NCAA basically said don;t worry about it then SMU told the NCAA that they should really look into this. So they said okay.

I realize that"

9 scholarships lost over 3 years
-(Minus) 2 scholarship credited
flexibility on how to impose the remaining 7 over next 3 years

Stallion, just curious, do you think the sanctions fit the violations? I am little jaded when it comes to the NCAA. :(

My own personal feeling is that anybody knowingly involved in blatant academic cheating should be immediately fired-including Larry Brown if he directly orchestrated it. I take that [deleted] a lot more personal than the NCAA apparently has in the past though. But the facts as we know it really don't go that far-they inconclusive on whether Larry Brown orchestrated it rather than attempting to cover it up

I've been shocked at how cursory the initial NCAA North Carolina investigation was treated. I think North Carolina deserves at least a 1 year Death Penalty

Basically, I do have some problems with the unequal treatment of academic issues by the NCAA when North Carolina's issues ran much deeper

I feel like SMU administration has lied so many times to its fanbase and ME over my life that I'm not sure if I really believe their story today. The allegations are worse than we were led to believe. But if this wasn't an orchestrated blatant attempt to get Keith Frazier eligible from the top then I think it was harsh especially the 9 scholarships. Maybe 3 would have been more appropriate.

Look if SMU's Coaching staff including Larry Brown was blatantly cheating SMU obtained a definite competitive advantage by enrolling an otherwise inadmissible recruit. Gaining a competitive advantage generally justifies bowl/NCAA sanctions. That's a fact. Signing a 4 Star Parade All-American, who otherwise, is inadmissible is gaining a competitive advantage. Not all NCAA violations are considered gaining a competitive advantage but this type definitely is.

Don't spin or rewrite the report for the NCAA. There are a lot of ifs in your personal rendition. The written report is all we have to go on and it stands on its' own. Given your response, I will take it that you believe the sanctions are overkill.

- Ulrich told Keith to sign up for the class
- Secretary took the courses for Keith
- Secretary watched Keith's kid sometimes
- Secretary told Keith to lie
- Keith wasn't comfortable, set up a 3 way call with Admin and Ulrich
- Ulrich says he wants nothing to do with it.
- Ulrich never reports it.
- LB hears about it later, and waits one month before reporting.
- SMU self-reports violation and puts Ulrich and Secretary on leave.
- Secretary won't talk to NCAA

NCAA perspective:
- There is no way that the Secretary took the class for sh!ts and giggles
- The secretary won't say who told her to do it.
- Ulrich won't say he told her to do it.
- SMU has not pointed the finger at who told her to do it.
- NCAA is making an assumption that it was someone in leadership at SMU (Brown or otherwise).
- Therefore, sanction SMU and sanction Brown for lack of control.

My reaction:
- SMU should come out and explain immediately WHY they have not been able to identify and fire the person responsible for giving the orders to the admin. Lack of ability to ID the culprit is a major failure on SMU's behalf.
- On the other hand, as bad as this is, Syracuse did it for 10 years and got pretty much the same penalty. SMU's penalty should literally be 1/10 the size of the Syracuse penalty. I don't see how this doesn't get reduced in court.

* So Maligi is free to be hired by another program? Wrongful indefinite leave of absence?
* I thought Larry would know better. Maybe he just wanted another big run before he retires.
* And, wow, that admin assistant? Acted all on her own?
* Well, the administration is trying to improve athletics and made a strong admissions exception with KF. I hope he blows up this year (in a good way).

JasonB, I agree with your assessment .

I also believe that following your logic, it seems pretty clear that Larry Brown is the main culprit.

If smu higher ups have same knowledge or suspicions, then Larry Brown should be fired immediately.
Maybe appeal this out and hope that Jankovich is the coach SMU has always thought he is,
And make a run this year. If Jank does well then
At least we are making the coaching transition a little early that we knew we would be doing anyway.

Someone screwed up big time, and I believe it was Brown.

http://www.syracuse.com/collegebasketball/index.ssf/2015/09/ncaa_penalties_for_smu_larry_brown_mirror_syracuse_and_jim_boeheim_report.html

According to the NCAA report, Brown did not report his knowledge of the violations for nearly a month and initially lied to NCAA investigators before correcting himself during the same interview. Brown was given a two-year show-cause penalty.

Boeheim was never found to have any knowledge of the violations, even after the fact, and was not found to have lied to investigators. He was never found to have directly done anything improper. Boeheim was not issued a show-cause penalty, considered one of the NCAA's most serious sanctions but, otherwise, was punished similarly to Brown.

Syracuse loses some hope that their penalties will be reduced in appeal.
