At some point, either late junior or early senior year, he was forced out of bounds on a play and ran into a contingent of wheelchair seated fans on the sideline, and was injured. My father said, although great, he never fully recovered from that injury.

Not sure how much of that is true or correct but could probably be researched. Possible that happened in his Lion days but I am pretty sure it was in the Cotton Bowl.

Interesting, I thought he came to SMU after seeing you play

I know he was multi-dimensional, but did Doak Walker ever play QB for either HP or SMU?

I ask because I was told a great trivia question once.

In their storied histories, SMU and UT have only played each other twice when both teams were undefeated entering into the game (1947 & 1983).

Besides this fact, what else did both games have in common?

Answer.......all 4 starting QBs were HP grads. Bobby Lane, Doak Walker, Lance McIlhenny & Rob Moerschell.

Understood, but if Doak QB'd SMU that day, the trivia question would still hold.

doak mainly played in the single or double wing at smu which doesn't use a conventional qb.

Gil Johnson was the QB for SMU in 1947 Championship team. The RB sometimes threw passes in those days. Doak did play some QB too-he was 26 for 46 for 304 as a passer his Heisman year in 1948

Doak did not have any P5 offers. He was admitted to SMU when a member of the staff took and passed one of his high school courses. True story.
