Big 12 grumblingI live in OK, and had a local sports radio station on today. I don't normally listen to them and don't know anything about these guys, so I don't know if this is a regular topic. They were very upset with the Big 12 leadership though, basically saying that refusal to expand has left them on the outside of the new system, having to hope that the other conferences falter in order for the Big 12 to get a shot. They want the conference to either expand to 12, or to petition for conferences without a championship game to be able to schedule a 13th regular season game (which I don't see happening ever).
It would be interesting to know how prevalent this opinion is.
Re: Big 12 grumblingthey've already got approval from NCAA to play a championship in a 10 team league-Big 12 couldn't get the votes in conference to make it happen

Re: Big 12 grumblingsorry Big 12 pursued it and Commissioner "fully expects" it to pass at meeting in January-still no consensus whether Big 12 will follow through with an actual game though

Re: Big 12 grumbling
Didnt Hawaii play 13 regular season games somewhere from 2010-2013? I know usc did once or twice during their bowl ban years. Do you always need special permission to do so?
Re: Big 12 grumblingthey have a special NCAA rule that allows only Hawaii to play a extra game. I think its a concession to finance travel budget

Re: Big 12 grumblingthe sticking point for the Big 12 is how you split into Divisions when there are 6 Texas/Okla teams in a 10 team conference and all of the best teams are in the South-Hint: you can't without [deleted] a bunch of teams off. Even if the North teams got an easy Division they couldn't survive without exposure to Texas recruiting. Arguably you could even the Divisions by adding 2 new schools to the South-UH and ? but I still don't think OU and OSU would stand for it-what would you do with Texas/OU. And wouldn't the South be a mini-SWC that failed. Big 12 is in a pickle

Re: Big 12 grumblingHouston and Cinci or Houston and Memphis fix that.
Re: Big 12 grumblingUT always hated the Big 12 playoff. Any idea if the new administration feels differently? Their thinking has been that in the normal universe only OU would be an impediment to an undefeated season much of the time. An undefeated UT will always make the final four given their history with the NCAA.
Re: Big 12 grumbling
Hawaii and anybody who plays at Hawaii. Hawaii, Colorado, and ULM will take advantage of it this year.
Re: Big 12 grumbling
^ This. If Texas Or Oklahoma were the undefeated teams there would be no problem (especially sense both of them schedule better non conference than TCU and Baylor). Big 12 expansion is prevented by a) not wanting to split the revenue pie any further b) not wanting to legitimize more recruiting competition in taxes and 3) limited available option that fit their academic and institutional profile. Honestly The best expansion would be to add 4 teams, Cincy, BYU, SMU, and Houston.
Re: Big 12 grumblingDidn't the SWC fail because the 4 teams left behind weren't pulling their weight on attendance, tv ratings, etc? TCU fixed it and got back in.
Re: Big 12 grumblingIf they could make the money work for 14 teams like Big 10 and ACC have done, you could do this:
South: UT, TCU, Tech, Baylor, West Virginia, Cincy, Memphis North: OU, OSU, K State, Kansas, Iowa State, SMU, Houston Its not strict geography, but this would accomplish several things. Gives the northerners a game in either Houston or Dallas every year. Provides travel partners for West Virginia. Gives UT eastern time zone exposure and limits their future games against SMU and UH who might whip them> ![]()
Re: Big 12 grumbling
Why not the Lone star division for texas teams and the others division lol
Re: Big 12 grumblingThe Big 12 grumbling about the playoff seems premature...in fact, I think the Big 12 has it as good or better than the other P5 conferences right now, because I think if any of their three top-ranked teams (OU, Okla St, Baylor) win out, they're in the Playoff.
SEC I think has two- Bama or Florida ACC only has one- Clemson Big Ten probably has three- OSU, Iowa, and Mich St Pac has maybe 2- Stanford and Utah The fact is, OSU-TCU was the first matchup of Big 12 heavyweights all year, and there's still a lot more big games to be played for one of their teams to prove themselves and earn their way into the CFP. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Big 12 grumblingIts all about money. expanding to 14 doesn't increase revenue. 12 gets them a championship game and more consideration into the playoff. They will add two teams, and they will be eastern to appeal more to the east coast and give WV travel rivalries. Cincy would pretty much be a lock. Not sure who is next - Memphis or UCF?
