DB calling it a career

Postby PonyPride » Mon Nov 30, 2015 2:50 am

SMU cornerback Ajee Montes said on Facebook Sunday that his football playing career is over because of concussions. Limited to 23 career games over three seasons after redshirting in 2012, Montes had 57 career tackles for the Mustangs.

Sorry to hear that, but I can't blame him. Concussions are a serious, potentially life-altering, issue.

Health comes first. Does the player get to finish school with a scholly when this happens?

Congrats to the kid for making a mature decision.

Best of luck Ajee, and way to use your head.

Bummer. I wondered why he disappeared this year. It's a bummer that the NCAA rules force coaches to be so quiet about injuries, because sometimes players play through injuries, and fans just call them out for performing poorly.

Its not as subjective of an issue or players only decision anymore. When you get diagnosed with a certain number of concussions, the doctors will no longer clear you to play, effectively shutting you down. I think the number might be 6. Not sure if that is an NCAA thing or what, but I think that is what happened here.

My brother had concussions that left him with headaches for years. This is obviously the smart decision to make. This is the only decision to make.

Don't think the NCAA forces coaches to be quiet about injuries because they announce them. They just have to abide by hippa which everyone does. But if I am a player I definitely do not want the opposing team to know my injuries so that they can try to target the injury.

Good luck to him, hopefully no long term effects. Unfortunately, many, many more just like him who 'tough it out' and never report this type of injury.

I know. It just sucks when you hear fans call players out for "not trying" or lack of effort when in reality they are just playing hurt and not at 100%.

Ajee is graduating in December. Best of luck to him.

But in general, if you have a career ending injury, you get a medical scholarship and get to finish out your degree. Happened to a good friend of mine on the team and he still got his stipend too. You also don't count against the 85 man schollie limit this way.

If I understand his situation, he is going to graduate without staying an extra year.

But, if he doesn't, the school can offer a "medical" scholarship to a player who cannot play again.
Austin Colbert, Sever Myers, and Daniel Gresham have all been declared medically disqualified. Colbert never even suited up for practice, but a neck injury is nothing to screw around with.

The most of the team must have had undisclosed injuries the last game then. I guess they they got hurt right after the Tulane game.

6 seems like a high number to me.

Best of Luck.
