I can see where you are coming from on that. There is certainly an argument that he has made an impact on college hoops, SMU hoops and the Smu community that is worthy of recognition for the ages.

I typically don't like "intangible" arguments. I really prefer, he's the best in X, Y, and Z ways, and therefore merits selection. But, let's think back a couple years ago. In a horribly outdated building, with less than 1,000 fans, we lost to South Carolina-Upstate, and the only "celebrity" that was in attendance was former Cowboys QB Brad Johnson, who was wearing an Upstate hat to cheer for a family member. Oh, and we lost. That merits mentioning twice. That's almost a perfect microcosm for what the program was.

I've always said the chance Nic and MK took by transferring to SMU should never be forgotten. I'm sure many times during that year they sat out watching from the bench in front of 2000 fans they probably wondered, what the hell have I done? Now look at what they have built three years later. It is remarkable. I hope they understand the significance of their accomplishments.

And that follow up shot was so dead on, just short.

I was standing right off the court just near the basket. I thought there was no way he would miss it.

We had a shot, but still got robbed by that idiot ref on the GT call.

There's always the middle-ground option of "honoring" jerseys in the rafters but not retiring the numbers. At schools where this is done, it becomes similar to the Levias number on the football team--it is an honor to wear that number.

If this team goes undefeated a nice mural and a plaque in moody would seem appropriate.

There are voters who have said they won't vote for teams that are ineligible for the postseason in the national rankings, like Hall of Fame voters in various sports who won't vote for players who have broken certain rules. Maybe this is the same kind of bias?
