UNT JC commits vs. ours

Postby Hoop Fan » Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:30 pm

since we are playing them next September, I was curious about the quality of UNT's three JC committments. Two of them are from Coffeyville, KS. The recruiting summary in the Dallas Morning New today was real positive about them and conversely not so glowing about our start to recruiting. No surprise there, business as usual at Belo, but I wondered if the UNT guys were in fact more highly rated? Did we want the qb they got?

You are reading way too much into nothing. I don't know where you get "real positive" and "not so glowing" out of it, if you reading the same things I am.

10.6 in the 100 isn't exactly sizzling.

its not a big deal, but here is what I mean: "North Texas is starting to gain some steam. It has plucked two TOP players out of Coffeyville Community College in Kansas." They go on to mention the players by name. As for our commitments, here is what they say: "SMU has three oral commitments so far." Don't bother to give the names at all. My English ain't so good, but that clearly IMPLIES a quality difference in our commitments. I'm just wondering if thats the case or some guy's spin or random choice of words.

The first sentence of the DMNs SMU blurb says "according to our own Calvin Watkins, SMU is set for a nice recruiting haul." Perhaps Calvin is privy to some inside info.

I guess I can't find the quote you are referring to. It isn't on any online edition I have seen.

Yeah I don't know what story any of you are talking about, but I did see something mentioning the Soth Lake Carrol reciever Rideaux. Not to read anything into it other than SMU is in Dallas, but they did list SMU first when talking about him.

And yes, Calvin is always privy to inside information.

Do you mean the Plano WR Rideaux? Or is there a guy at SLC with the same name? I have heard that there's a WR out there (SLC) that we're interested in, other than Renfro and Dodge (if he's even a WR -- I don't know, just seen his name mentioned here....) I'll try to find out a name.

And yes, I expect Calvin does have some info, since he knows everyone in the athletic department, but he is not the DMN's recruiting writer, so I expect he doesn't have time to follow things too closely until Signing Day. Plus, he's also covering Froggie High, so he has to keep tabs on what they're up to, too.

In the DMN Dallas print edition for December 19 on I believe the second page, there was a breakdown of recruiting by school. The sentence I quoted was the first sentence in the SMU section. Perhaps the DMN edited the story, although it was already short, for the on line edition.

The problem with Calvin Watkins' and recruiting news is that Bennett can't tell him, "Oh hey, we are going to get ___ from SLC." That would violate NCAA rules. In fact, none of the coaches can really tell anybody. So you have to wait for it to hit somewhere else. Now do they let stuff slip from time to time to greatful alumnai? Sure. But it pretty much means Calvin isn't going to be reporting recruiting news until signing day.

Oh wait, that is tomorrow. Fancy that.
