They hired Trent Johnson last time
According to an article in DMN, Johnson actually had a pretty good coaching record when he was hired.

Re: Pastner to TCU?
According to an article in DMN, Johnson actually had a pretty good coaching record when he was hired. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Pastner to TCU?
At LSU, he had 1 good season (with inherited players) and ended up with a .519 overall win percentage and a .391 win percentage in the SEC. If he hadn't taken the TCU job, he may have been fired by LSU and almost certainly wouldn't have lasted 2 more seasons. Bottom line: he was not the guy to take a mediocre Mountain West program into the Big 12. While we tried to hire Buzz Williams and "settled" for Larry Brown, they hired a mediocre coach. Frankly, the 2012 BB Coaching Search may have been the first time that the SMU Athletic Department outperformed the TCU Athletic Department in the post-sWc era. Do unto others before they do unto you!!

I know Penny has his own AAU team also. Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
Re: Pastner to TCU?
Considering it was an absolute sh*t-show that led to national ridicule and contributed to the dismissal of the Athletic Director, I think this might be explained by the "blind squirrel" theory.

I call it the only time we got lucky in the last three decades. ![]() ![]()
Re: Pastner to TCU?Yeah and LB thought he was coming to the Big East. Finally Lady Luck smiled on SMU.
God knows prior to LB if it wasn't for bad luck we wouldn't have had any luck at all. Pony 81
Re: Pastner to TCU?Didn't TCU pay Johnson about $2MM per year? I believe he had success at Stanford.
Jamie Dixon seems like a solid hire. Hope they go with BCG. Maybe the UTA coach?
Re: Pastner to TCU?
While there was definitely some luck involved, SMU finally benefited from some rich alums who were unwilling to settle for "just a guy" and who forced Orsini into hiring Brown. But for them, I suspect that we might have hired the UTA coach (which probably would have been an "ok" hire), UNT's current coach (not working out for them), or LSU's coach (recruiting machine, but can he coach?). Do unto others before they do unto you!!

Re: Pastner to TCU?Would Pearl leave Auburn already, for UNLV? Dixon would be the scary hire IMO. The Howland-Dixon tree has had sustained success for more than a decade.
I would actually like to see Kelvin leave Houston, I think he's actually doing some nice things down there. I know we want Houston to be solid, but not too solid.. #GodFather #Tempo
Re: Pastner to TCU?
Unless TCU is willing to spend crazy money on a coach, would a notable coach be willing to try to build a B12 program from scratch with this reality? 1) In the B12, virtually every program has a history of BB success except them. BU, UT, OU, WVU, and mighty KU will be nearly impossible to catch much less beat. 2) TAMU is rolling (and recruiting) in the SEC 3) SMU and Houston are going to be Tourney quality teams for years to come. From a BB perspective, they are in a similar spot to when we hired Morris. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Pastner to TCU?Baylor has almost no history of basketball success. Prior to Scott Drew's arrival, Baylor had a total of four NCAA tournament appearances in school history. The last time they won a conference championship was 1950. Drew probably took what many considered at the time the worst P5 basketball job in the country (Northwestern was probably just as bad at the time).
With the right hire TCU could become competitive in the Big 12. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs
