Gene Phillips sure looked good. 51 points. Sure could use that offensive production this year.

Agreed, despite me not being alive. Nic was only a sparkle in Gene's eye that night, I'm told.

I had a flashback to Gene Phillips dropping 51 on UT in Gregory Gym when SMU's Women Volleyball played UT the other nite in Gregory. Ah I remember it well

I seem to recall our '55 ('56?) team being ahead of Texas by about 50 points at halftime. We were so good back then I recall TCU (there was no time limit apparently) sitting down and just rolling the ball back and forth just to use up the clock and get the game over. They didn't want to try and shoot as that would let us have the ball back again with a sure score.

Just think of how many Geno would have scored with a 3 point line back in his day. He had range

also freshman could not play varsity back then so all Gene's points his freshman year didn't count towards his varsity total points. I do recall he did the 'flop' a lot.

I just remember how many garbage points he scored inside with his twisting turning moves through the trees. He was not a big guy but he was really effective in the paint, as well as being a deadly outside shooter. I seem to recall he was all but automatic from the FT line as well

I wonder what his recalculated ppg would have been as a Senior if there was a 3 point line-about 33 ppg. Another guy that could have thrived with a 3 point line was Bubba Jennings at Tech

Still have memories of Bubba pounding on the dorm room doors waking us up at tech basketball camp in the 80s
