Well I have some 70's era stickum but I do not qualify as a stud since about 1986. That's when my body began its own "death penalty", and I am apparently on the same schedule for revival as SMU.

I think it had more to do with timing and game situation (as being 25 yards open for a TD). He sat after two early drops which would have been TDs but the actual number of drops wasn't too great after those first two big drops. Note: Tubbs doesn't sit Bamba or Morris because they went 0-fer in a couple of games. Once you play a freshman then you keep playing him even though he may make HUGE mistakes-especially when you ain't going anywhere with the guys you got anyway. I applaud Tubbs for his long range thinking in developing young talent and wished we had used Givens the same way. Hey at least he has the talent to get open downfield which is MORE than half the battle. The decision this year needs to be made early on Burley. Is the jump from 2A to Division 1A too great in which case he should redshirt. Once he touches the field as a true freshman he should get at a minimum 50% of the snaps.

Couldn't agree more. But I recall several other drops by Givens later in the season. Speed is one thing, but that guy has got to work on pulling it in if he wants to make an impact.

Seems I remember him making some circus type catches (I think against ECU). He made one catch that I recall saying "that more than made up for the earlier drops." I think he will be a great asset if they get him on the field for something other than a telegraphed end around.

Not to take anything away from Tubbs, but the situation is a little different for him than for the football team. Tubbs doesn't have much choice but to keep playing Bamba and Morris...we don't have a lot of depth in that area, whereas, we have a lot of WR's to throw into a game. Givens is going to be fine and what experience he got this season will help him prepare for this fall. I predict he will have a breakout season this fall as he WILL learn to catch and hold on to the ball.

Interesting. I know Zack Sledge walked on, but later earned a scholarship, as did Chris Foster. Chase, Pellerin, Warren, Lowery, Hawkins, Givens, Cleveland were all scholarship guys right from the start. Who am I forgetting?

That's true. I only remember two or three shouldabeens that got away from him. And this guy deserves a mulligan for last year. From what I understand (I've never met him personally), he's a very good kid who wants to atone for a couple that got away last year, and I hope we all cheer like hell for him, starting in the spring game.
