Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandThings to do this week;
1) Beat Tulane 2) Fire Hart 3) Leave AAC (I'm sure they can replace us with Georgia Southern or some other prestigious university) 4) Join NTSU message board and post asinine [Deleted]
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandThe AAC was the best G5 conference. Not anymore thanks again to these additions.
We aren't equals on any measure which is why this move makes us feel like an insult. Like I've stated, this is about about as much of a rivalry as Texas and Kansas have. Insert "this is fine" GIF
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will Expand
Where do you suggest we go when we leave the AAC? CUSA might have openings or we could join Army, Liberty, UMass, New Mexico State and UConn as independents and beg teams to come to Ford. That would be swell.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandAt any other university with any self respect, some heads would roll, turner, hart…
aresco has proven himself to be incompetent. This is beyond embarrassing what is going on with SMU. If anyone doesn’t think this new conference realignment is a piece of garbage for the existing schools in the American has lost all good sense. Honestly, might as well shut it all down and put the money towards academics and research.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will Expand
You're right! Sweller than playing our new conference mates. We certainly have more brand recognition around the country than those other independents (outside of Army).
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will Expand
The point is adding these six schools serves absolutely no purpose or gain. It’s adding just to add schools. Honestly, if you could cherry pick 6 schools from other non P5 conferences, and this is the best you can do, then do nothing. Sometimes that’s the best move. Every other P5 conference stood pat for now, we should have too until there was a better move. Make no mistake - this was a downward move and any association with any of these schools (with the obvious exception of Rice) makes me reconsider the value of the SMU degree and affiliation.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will Expand
If you lowered your attendance to 6,000, you would have the same average, because your reputation is a commuter school and lowering attendance doesn’t mean you get the top candidates only. If you mean, what does the top 6,000 of the unt class look like, then I would guess that is in math terms your top 20% percentile. I checked and your top 75% is 1260. My guess you would have to go to your top 90% to get averages that are close to SMU. Which means maybe your top 3,000, and all the support you have from an infrastructure perspective goes away, no more public funding. It means your argument is completely non-sensical. You’re making suppositions that have no basis. It’s just like arguing with a three year old. Why not just assume your UG population to your top 50 students and say the average sat is like that of Harvard.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will Expand
I’m saying you’re comparing apples to oranges. Our focus isn’t selectivity, it’s educating the local community at a reasonable price. Obviously we aren’t going to go down to 6,000 students, my point is you’re comparing a small private school and a large public university with a different mission statement. You’re wanting to stick to student input metrics and I’m saying look at the research money. If you’re a good student at either school you’ll get a good job. We certainly have a good crop of quality students based on those metrics, but we also admit way more students. But even besides that, UNT is no slouch. I know the perception is that it’s a commuter school, but the vast majority of students live within a few miles of campus. It has its own system, (one of only a few in the state), a law school and a medical school. It’s not a UT system school dropped in the middle of a big metro in the 70s. The school goes back as far as TCU. Those who are OK with UTSA but not us haven’t done their research.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandI get it, I think UNT is a fine school. But don’t compare it to SMU academically. There’s no basis, and I’m not presuming that SMU is this great academic powerhouse because we’re not. We have a lot of limitations. But I do believe SMU is the second best private university in Texas, and for those that can get scholarships or can afford it and simply don’t want to go to large public school, it’s a better option than UT Austin.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandAnd furthermore, you can’t deny objectively that the American with this new realignment is worse off than what it is currently with cincy, UH and UCF. We’re just not - it’s taking a significant step back all because sonny came on a couple years too late. We got our act together too late - too little, too late type of thing. The feeling is like we’re going to a funeral - the death of SMU again in athletics. And Turner and Hart are the main responsible parties and they should both resign.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will Expand
We’re in agreement then. I’m not comparing them based on SAT or USNWR rankings, that’s a fool’s errand. I’m saying it’s not so elite, and UNT isn’t that bad, that you can look down on them as a conference mate. Rice didn’t even do that and they actually could. If Rice said we think being associated with you is bad for our reputation I would agree. My grandfather went to SMU and my cousin helped y’all win a decent amount of games, I have no problem with SMU and what they do at all. Just don’t get some of the hubris about UNT on here.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandI never said I preferred UTSA to UNT. Honestly, I prefer UNT because it’s closer. My point is I prefer that this wasn’t our option because it’s a zero-sum gain. This is very good for UNT, but it’s equally bad for SMU. We’re taking a step backwards and there is no positive in this for my school, and it’s highly disappointing. My argument in this is that it would have been better to have not done anything, that Aresco is a clown, and that we at SMU have very poor senior leadership. Our President May very well be one of the longest serving presidents out of any University, and the board of trustees is not doing its job by having him stepped down a while ago. He’s a great fundraiser but his years as President have long passed. All of what were suffering now is due in large part to his inept moves.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandOh yeah this is awful for you guys - I see what everyone’s saying now. Oh well.
Don’t take our President. He’s great.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandTurner should be fired but no interest in taking the President of a school ranked about 300, which doesn’t even include liberal arts colleges. Thanks but no thanks. Move along now.
Re: Aresco Says AAC Will ExpandI will say that UNT has a really good dance team. Respect!
