So we have to play the best team in the tournament in the first round?

Re: 2022/23 Men's Non-Conference
Not sure why you all think this. Iona had a better season than we did last year. Posted a top 10 W on neutral floor in beating Alabama. Held their own vs Kansas. Should have made the NCAAs but bubble burst when they did not get a W in conference tourney.DanFreibergerForHeisman wrote:Yeah we should clean their clocks.ponyboy wrote:No, Iona has to play the best team first round.
They lost Tyson but Pitino has reloaded. In fact, a number of his new players are from Texas.

Sagarin - the ranking that had Memphis 30 spots ahead of SMU? That's a good one to use.ponyboy wrote:We ended the season 50 spots better than them in Sagarin.
SMU also finished 71 spots ahead of an elite 8 team in Sagarin. The Elite 8 team that Iona beat in a game that was not that close.
We will have an entirely different team on the floor this year. Minus the best PG we have had in years.
But sure - we will dominate them.

Re: 2022/23 Men's Non-Conference
With the radical makeover of the squad (small to big and a new coaching staff) I don't think I can even begin to guess what this years team is going to be like.

You make a good point. Iona ended up 10 slots ahead of us in the RPI.PonyTime wrote:Sagarin - the ranking that had Memphis 30 spots ahead of SMU? That's a good one to use.

2022-23 Men's Basketball Non-Conference Schedule Announced
DALLAS (SMU) – Match-ups with Dayton, Arizona State, New Mexico, Texas A&M and TCU plus the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic highlight the 2022-23 SMU men's basketball non-conference schedule.
The first season under Head Coach Rob Lanier opens at Moody Coliseum on Monday, Nov. 7 versus Texas A&M-Commerce. The Mustangs then have a trip to Dayton (Nov. 11) as the teams meet for the third straight year. Then, SMU has a four-game homestand against New Mexico (Nov. 15), Evansville (Nov. 19), Louisiana (Nov. 22) and Lamar (Nov. 27).
The last part of the non-conference includes a pair of renewed rivalries. The Mustangs visit Texas A&M on Nov. 30 as the programs meet for the first time in nine seasons. After home games with Jackson State (Dec. 3) and Arizona State (Dec. 7), SMU faces TCU at Dickies Arena on Dec. 10 as the pair faceoff for the first time in four years.
The non-conference schedule concludes at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu Dec. 22-25. The field includes George Washington, Hawai'i, Iona, Pepperdine, Seattle, Utah State and Washington State.
In American Athletic Conference play, the Mustangs will play home and away against Cincinnati, ECU, Houston, Memphis, USF, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. SMU will have just a single match-up with Temple at home and UCF on the road.
SMU is coming off of a 24-9 season, that included a second-place finish in the American Athletic Conference and a trip to the second round of the NIT. The Mustangs were 16-0 at Moody Coliseum during the regular season.

Paul Quinn again? If I recall correctly, that was one of SMU basketball's all time low-light moments when Paul beat us

That is just an exhibition game. No meaning. Paul is nice enough to stop by occasionally.
I do not think Paul beat us. It was UAPB for the lowlight.

Re: 2022/23 Men's Non-Conference
Glad to see we’ve got TCU.
Re: 2022/23 Men's Non-Conference
Start off with good ole Texas A&M Commerce, this is the first time I ever remember playing them.
Back when they were known as East Texas State University I spent my freshman year there playing football before transferring to SMU. Good times up there in Commerce, I must tell you!
Definitely good to see TCU back on the schedule, hopefully, never to drop off again.

Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!
Re: 2022/23 Men's Non-Conference
Very unimpressive schedule. New coach, but more of the same.
