SMU adds 100 more students to freshman class

Last year, SMU had 1,572 enrolled students but this year's incoming class is 100 students larger. Unfortunately, that's created an issue with housing availability which I've heard anecdotally has particularly pinched transfer student housing. I'm not sure how the strong demand will roll through acceptance rate and yield but a higher (than expected) enrolled class means good things for the future. Admissions can tighten things up a bit next year.

SMU's enrollment strength is in the midst of trends showing that '[total U.S.] college attendance among undergraduates has fallen almost 10 percent since Covid emerged in early 2020." Small private colleges, regional public universities, and rural institutions all face strong enrollment headwinds while enduring high inflation costs.

If we can expand the size of the university without lowering our standards we absolutely should do so. The housing issue will work itself out - there is a ton of nearby off campus housing. We should be 10k undergrads if possible. Also a new dorm is easy to pay for by floating debt and paying with room rent. Built in required tenants.

So the public A&M model vs. the UT model (growing enrollment vs. fixing enrollment)? I'd rather see improved quality rather than larger enrollment. Not sure where another dorm would be built.
