Moral MajorityModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Moral Majorityto all those preaching righteous indignation over the violations made known so far by SMU-SHUT UP. There is no way in hell that justifies his dismissal and in fact, he would WIN a lawsuit against SMU since the law would not easily allow a forfeiture of a contractual term based upon such a minor violation.
SMU screwed up by not more fully disclosing the reasons for his dismissal even if they were general statements of the area of concerns. All of the above being said-I eallly don't know if the dismissal was justified and will await further disclosure-but please don't try to get on your moral soapbox and claim horror that Tubbs bought a meal, laundry detergent. If you are going to be a typical SMU suck-up then await further factual support because otherwise SMU is just defaming the reputation of Coach Tubbs.
Really weak post.
Defamation against Tubbs? They have proof that he committed the violations they have claimed. Unlawful termination? Normally, those are only filed when someone is denied payment of their contract. As you know, Jimmy is being paid the final two years of his contract. I hope Jimmy apologizes to the school. Willis to slot receiver!
Per DMN Blog:
"I don't think anyone has a problem with firing Tubbs. In today's era of sports, those who don't win get fired. Quickly. The problem is the silly reason they gave. If there's more to the story, tell it. Posted by Jean-Jacques Taylor" Guess he should change the sentence to "I don't think anyone has a problem with firing Tubbs except for Four people over on ponyfans." Don't like the way it went down but Hopefully the rest will be told, doubt it. The good news is life will go on for both SMU and the 1.2 million dollar richer tubbs.
This is the first meaningful contribution you have made to the board, I knew you had it in you... #NewLobCity
Max Williams gives money to Tubbs. Tubbs buys the players hamburgers. That is a violation. At both OU and SMU, Tubbs repeatedly seemed to be unaware of NCAA violations. Think about it. The President of IU thought about it when configuring Sampson's contract. HF, do you still want to re-hire Tubbs? Willis to slot receiver!
Actually the ponyfans four agree with his post. We are used to the fact that Tubbs was fired, like it or not. We are not happy with the reasons given. And neither should you be.
Just because Castiglione denied the allegations on the ESPN article? Is that your evidence? Sampson was forced to sign a pretty embarassing contract over them, so I wouldn't take the Castiglione's word. Willis to slot receiver!
no, I have been told by what I consider an unbiased source that Tubbs is not caught up in the OU thing and that had no bearing on SMUs decsion. Hey, its hearsay and take it for what its worth, but its better than just shooting from the hip like you are doing. Once again, consider you are talking about a persons career here.
Alright, let's go back (again) to the athletic department's carefully worded statement on the matter. I know it's been posted before, but it's still all we have to go on:
"SMU has terminated Jimmy Tubbs as head men's basketball coach, effective immediately. In February, SMU self-reported to the NCAA alleged violations in the men's program and initiated an investigation in cooperation with the NCAA and an independent firm. SMU's investigation to date has revealed NCAA violations in a number of areas in the program. The investigation continues. The few incidents described in recent media reports are not the sum of the alleged violations in the program. Those incidents would not, in themselves, warrant significant action on the part of the University. SMU holds its coaches accountable for high standards of compliance with NCAA rules and University procedures in all areas of their programs." So read that again -- the University is saying this firing is NOT, I repeat NOT, just about burgers and cheer. Some of you, even though you have read it several times, seem to believe that this part of the statement is a bold-faced lie. Why would they lie in this situation? It would be so stupid, even for them. Before they made this decision, they knew how this was going to look, and they knew people were going to freak out, cry racism, etc. IMO, they would not make a statement like that if they could not back it up with evidence at a future date. I guess we'll find out later. To me, the question is, why can't they tell us. The timing of this thing was dumb (one week before signing day?), and somebody's head should roll for it. Other than that, I think we can all agree that it'd be nice if they'd shake the "cranal-anal inversion" and disclose what they found.
It seems that they think they have released the info. The burgers and cheer story was supplemented by practice time and minor tutoring references. And remember, the press release you are quoting came a full day after the announcment and was a result of the s-storm that followed. SMU has also said it has concluded its investigation. Yes, the ncaa has yet to release its findings, but that shouldnt prevent smu from announcing and self reporting the major violations if they exist. They don't exist I guess.
It's too bad we can't all get this upset over actual atrocities in the world say the genocide in Sudan, and the fact that nuclear weapons continue to proliferate to countries of questionable restraint.....
Is what happened to Tubbs wrong if all he did was buy a couple of burgers...yeah, is it wrong that millionare Max Williams will get off scott free for also breaking the rules...yeah, but that is the way the world works. Tubbs is going to be fine, he got a nice payoff, will end up as an assistant somewhere better, and while he may never be a head coach anywhere else, in all likelihood SMU is the only school that would have ever hired him as a DIA head coach, so he is probably where he needs to be. The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
