Mustangs Comeback Falls Short In Second Round Of WNIT

LUBBOCK, Texas (SMU)-- The SMU women's basketball season ended Monday night with a 61-49 loss at Texas Tech in the second round of the WNIT in the United Supermarkets Arena.

Jasmine Smith led the Mustangs with 16 points. Savannah Wilkinson reached double-digits for the 13th time in the last 14 games with 12 points, and added five rebounds and three assists. Chantae Embry scored six points and grabbed eight boards and Ella Brow scored seven and tallied two assists.

SMU scored 13 unanswered points to start the second half on the way to outscoring Texas Tech 18-12 in the quarter. Wilkinson opened the half with an and-one layup followed by back-to-back buckets from Reagan Bradley. A pair of Embry free throws gave the Mustangs their first lead since the first quarter. The Mustangs cut the deficit to five entering the fourth quarter, but could not put together enough stops in the final period.

SMU trailed 31-20 at the half. Smith scored the first nine points of the game for the Mustangs. Texas Tech went on a run to give the Red Raiders an 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

SMU finished the 2022-23 season with a 17-13 record under second-year head coach Toyelle Wilson. Wilkinson, Smith and Brow each earned All-American Athletic Conference honors.

The Mustangs made the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2014 and 2015. This season marked the third postseason appearance in seven seasons. SMU defeated Little Rock 68-42 in the first round of the WNIT in Moody Coliseum.
