Chris Dyer has been the HC at DeSoto for several years....won a state championship in 2003. As far as I know he never coached at SOC or in the DISD.

Actually, yes he did. He won a State Championship at SOC in 92 and he left there around 96 and spent a couple of years over at Townview when he got burned out. Only problem is that he wouldn't accept it, in all likelihood. Prior to his tenure at SOC, he was an assistant under Tubbs when he was at Kimball.

no, i meant townview. yes, i know townview does not have athletics. he was actually an intramural director while he was there. when the position at desoto opened up, he jumped at the position and the rest is history.

Okay, Multimedia, I agree with some of what you said, but you stepped over the line. For some reason, this is about the only school I am aware of where the band is actually belittled and criticized for playing its own spirit songs and trying, however ineffectually, to get those in attendance to join in with a unified cheer/clap/song.

I think you are paying a little too much attention the belittle's you recieve.. yall do a great job and I can't stress that enough.. but even you will admit that there is nothing wrong w/ having a little variety at the basketball games.. especially w/ all the hoopla that dallas fans are used to nowadays goin to AAC...

I don't want to hear Louie Louie, Land of 1000 Dances, or Mess Hall all night either...but those are jr high band songs, I don't think anyone here is asking the band to play that crap. It wouldn't kill the band to play modern songs. If anything, Tommy can arrange great versions of newer songs that can't just be ordered from sheetmusic.com.

The band will always play the jazz stuff (and we're not talking wynton marsalis bop jazz, just fun stuff that swings), but there is ALWAYS room for new songs.

One more thing, while a few of his song choices were a little out there, I thought Kehler's strongest suit was bball band. We always tried to rotate the playlist, we played a lot, and he had a pretty good feel for the momentum, etc. Football was a different story, but some of our best performances were in Moody.

Heh, as long as I don't show up to Moody and hear them playing "Downtown" again. I've always thought they should go to a unique gimmick at bball games, like playing modern music and a singer and an electric guitar. Nice modern sound, with solid horn backups and a good singer rocking out. It would get press I tell you.

And some would argue that "Downtown" is classic mustang jazz, because it's on Mustang Jazz Volume II.

For basketball, think less of a marching band indoors, more of a rock band with horns. That's what I like to see.

I've always said you should refuse to come bail them out over and over again, then maybe they'd make some 1st trumpets show up. They are only the most important players in the whole band.

As I posted in another thread. The Mustang Band can and should play music that fits their jazz swing style. Songs like Glen Miller's: "In the Mood", "Sing, Sing, Sing", and just about any dixieland tune can really get things going. I don't think they should be trying to play Emenem or "Jump" because that would just not work with all that brass.

...some people just wanna be like everyone else, so a copycat proposal is an easy way to shun anything original and avoid making the effort to build our own unique game atmosphere. What takes place while the clock is running is what gets the fans pumped-up. College basketball is college basketball... it's not the pros... nor should it try to capture that cheesy atmosphere. Ever go to UT games? You get a steady dose of "Texas Fight", "March Grandioso" and "Wabash Cannonball"... same stuff every time... same at ATM, Baylor... it's the play on the floor that makes it an event. There is always room for improvement to the game experience, but don't mess with the Mustang Band. Many of you have been at Moody when it is PACKED. It's great. But it is the winning team that puts butts in seats and generates spirit.

we play glenn miller charts, 1 of which we play quite frequently: pennsylvania 6-5000 (with a mustang band twist).
