McGill named CSC Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas (CSC/SMU) – SMU graduate student Jonathan McGill was named to the 2024 Academic All-America football teams selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday in a release.

McGill was selected to the second team and becomes the first SMU football student-athlete to be selected to one of the teams since Tyler Page in 2020.

Defensive back/wide receiver Travis Hunter from the University of Colorado, quarterback Brayden Long from Slippery Rock University, quarterback Aaron Syverson from Saint John's (Minn.) University and running back Jameson Chesser from Taylor University were named as the Academic All-America® Team Members of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, and NAIA, respectively.

Nine members of the Academic All-America® Division I football teams boast a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in their undergraduate or graduate work. The 25 members on the first team have an average GPA of 3.82, with both teams holding a collective average GPA of 3.80.

The native of Coppel, Texas has succeeded not just on the field, but in the classroom during his time on the Hilltop, posting a cumulative 4.0 GPA while getting his masters in Liberal Studies. The former Stanford graduate also was a two-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection while he was an undergraduate.

McGill enjoyed his best season yet in 2024 as a Mustang, finishing with career highs in total tackles (58) and interceptions (3). His great play resulted in being an All-ACC honorable mention by the conference and helped power an SMU defense that ranked in the top 25 in FBS in numerous categories on defense.

The captain helped guide the Mustangs to an 11-win season for a second straight year, resulting in the first berth ever in the College Football Playoff for the program and an appearance in the ACC Championship.
