SMU signs F Cameron SpencerMustang Basketball Signs Cameron Spencer to National Letter of Intent
Forward from Orange, Texas, Averaged 14 points, 8.9 Rebounds His Senior Season May 18, 2006 DALLAS (SMU) - Cameron Spencer (Orange, Texas) has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend SMU and will begin play with the men's basketball team in fall, 2006, as announced Thursday by SMU head coach Matt Doherty </sports/m-baskbl/mtt/doherty_matt00.html>. Spencer, a 6-9 power forward/post player at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, recorded solid statistical numbers his senior season, including 14 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 2.9 assists per game. Named to the 2006 Orange Leader first team, he was a 20-4A Coaches' All-District first-team selection and earned 20-4A Coaches' All-District Defensive MVP honors. Spencer's high school coach this past season was Darin Harley, and is part of the AAU basketball program, DFW Select, coached by Vonzell Thomas. "We are very excited about Cameron's signing," said Doherty. "He will have the opportunity to be a part of great things here at SMU. His academic background and character make him a great fit not only on the basketball court, but in the classroom as well. He embodies all of the characteristics than an SMU student-athlete should." Spencer is the son of Earnest Spencer Sr. and Joann Spencer.
Found this ranking of the top 25 players in SE Texas. Looks like our guy is number 11 on this list.

TX Roundball's Top 193 for 2006. I don't have a subscription so do not have the most updated list but this was posted during this highschool basketball season. Not sure how the rankings have changed after the completion of the season but on this list he is ranked higher than Ronnie Morgan of SOC. I like his size at 6'8 250, a true PF size, not a tweener guy. Hopefully MD sees something good in this kid. Welcome to SMU Cameron!

Good block and then dunk by Spencer @ about 1:02:30 In the Beaumont Central game.
I'll go ahead and tell you I know very little about B-ball, but I guess my question would be if this guy has the agility to move from a High School Center to PF. ... _ _ .._
I must be fair in saying these rankings were before completion of their Sr. season's. I am sure Morgan climbed some due to his impressive Sr. season and could even be ranked higher than Spencer in the final rankings. Even still, I like that Spencer has a couple inches and 30 pounds on Morgan and is obviously a player Doherty thinks highly enough of to offer. Hopefully he can help fill the void left by Morris' departure.
Cameron...Given the numbers, this guy looks like he has the potential to be a big time player at SMU. Doherty's perspective is also very appealing, I liked how Doherty responded to his signing as a chance to be a part of great things here at SMU. Very exciting!
Ranked higher than the great Ronnie Morgan, is he? Interesting. SMU allegedly lost a chance to sign Morgan=big to-do in the DMN and on this board. Now we sign someone ranked higher...and....well not as big a to-do.
Thats a joke, and a sad one. Morgan really emerged his senior year, and his play made him a legitimate prospect. When the late signing period started, Morgan was the best uncommitted, academically qualified player left in Texas. If the lists are what impress you, take a look at Texas Hoops top-160 compiled after the season finished. Morgan is 25th, I dont see Spencer anywhere in the top-160. Perhaps I missed his name, but I dont see it anywhere. And the list that Icon posted that's supposed to be the best in Southeast Texas is laughable. I see one player on that list that signed with a D-1 school, and only a few names that I even recognize (mostly the kids from Beaumont Ozen). I dont know what their definition of Southeast is, but apparently whoever made that list up didnt want to include Corpus Christi (Paul Wall, signed with Stanford) or Fort Bend (DJ Augustin, signed with UT.) How are you going to trust something like that? If you look hard enough, you can find a list that says almost anything you want. Trying to make a comparison between Morgan and Spencer based on that only shows you dont know what you're saying. Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
My apologies, XtC. I was unaware that Icon failed to shoot that list over to you for approval before posting it. Shame on me for making an observation from such flawed data!
Oh well. Guess we still have to pull for Cameron, though, b/c he's coming to SMU, and Ronnie's not.
