Arkansas MemoryWhile working the FedEx this weekend, Ryan Palmer, an Aggie rolled through and a fan yelled out "Gig 'em Ags"...thinking I had a fellow SWC member in my midst, I strolled over to engage...
HtoL: "Did I hear some Aggies over here..?" Fan: "No, I just saw his Aggie headcover and gave him a shout out.." HtoL: "Oh, I though maybe I had a fellow SWC friend in my midst..." Fan: "I'm an SWC man, but not an Aggie" HtoL: "Which school did you attend, sir" Fan: ARKANSAS!! (followed by a sooooooiiieee PIG!) At his point, I couldn't help myself.... HtoL: "Do you have any pull with Broyles...?" Hog: "YES!!, Frank and I are friends...." HtoL: "I went to SMU and we would LOVE to get you guys back on the football schedule" Hog:"Well...so would we..any team we can easily beat would be better than Florida / Tenn. / Georgia (grinning, laughing..acting like a typical Hog Fan) HtoL: "I agree....about the ONLY team SMU has consistently beaten since the DP has been Arkansas...we LOVE playing you guys...in fact, rememebr the very first question asked of McNutt after he was hired?" Hog:"uhhhhhh.." HtoL:" Hey coach, can you beat SMU!!!" Then the guy turns to his friends and begins to explain what a GREAT frosh class they have coming in, how wonderful the Hogs are, etc., etc... As you recall, after we got the DP, Broyles says something to the effect of.."SMU might NOT win a game for 10 years!", then he signs a home and home with us....what a chump....BRING ON THE HOGS!! We love playing those boys!! Long Live Drew Randle.
I have several hog friends. They have a very large and loyal fan base in the DFW area. Many of them were quite upset that the SMU series ended. They weren't too happy about the "Dallas" game that was moved to Shreveport either - especially the outcome!
I know they have been trying to schedule games back in Dallas. That's why they scheduled TCU in '08 @TCU and '09 @Ark. They have wonderfully loyal fans and I would love to get them back on the schedule along with Baylor.
We gain nothing from playing Ark. Ark gains everything. Ark needs the exposure in the Texas market for recruiting purposes. We don't need to worry about "the one that got away" in Ark. Ark is perfectly positioned to beat the U of L Monroes of the world. Frank needs Texas recruits to move up and beat the Ga. and Floridas of the world. The best way to get that exposure is to play Texas teams. We do not need to help Ark achieve that goal. And yes, nothing is more exciting since the dead penalty then beating Ark. That said, let Frank and the pigs find other Texas teams to help them recruit.
I would be happy to play Arkansas if we signed to play them in Little Rock and then in Ford. And only after we starting drawing at Ford. Nothing more embarassing than the last time we played them in the Cotton Bowl and witnessed 40,000 Arkansas fans and 5,000 SMU fans. I agree with Ponyte on it being a recruiting trip for Broyles. But, if we could limit their contingency I would love it. If they do not like that scenerio, then I do not want them in Dallas. It is simply too devastating to witness the fan discrepancy. It is one thing with TT or OSU, but Arkansas likes to travel to Dallas and probably has as many living Alumni in Dallas as SMU.
It is, Ponyte...a mind numbing over analysis coupled with a grand failure to grasp the realities of who we are, where we are and what we are...
I'd play Arkansas in Dallas. Let me put it this way, who would be better to play, Arkansas State or Arkansas? Which team would it look better to beat, Arkansas State or Arkansas? Which team would bring tons of fans and recruits to a game in Dallas and if we won, would not those recruits possibly be swayed to move SMU up on their list? Also, Arkansas would bring out more old SMU fans than say, Arkansas State. HOOOOWEE PIG SOOOEEE. I'm callin out the Hogs. If they don't show, they're really not hogs but chickens. HERE CHICK, CHICK, CHICK CHICK.
If SMU plays any former SWC rival such as Arkansas, Baylor, Tech etc, I triple the number of friends/family I can bring to the game. Its much harder to get them interested in a Sam Houston/north texas/anywhere else state game. If SMU is competitive, it gets even easier against "name" opponents.
That has been my experience anyway.
