Preparation, discipline, attention to details, teamwork=winning BB
Folks, DOH has a game plan. Combined with his attention to the market and the media, he knows what is it going to take. We should fasten our seat belts. When practice and the seasons starts, we are going to be in for a fun ride. Mustang Mania! Pony Up
No, CarMichael, it's true, from what I understand. I also hadn't heard any retirement announcement, but I gather it's true.
So would Coach Lynch report only to Coach Doherty, or would he technically work under Coach Faucette? Nothing like reviving the old Maryland/UNC rivalry between Diesel and Lynch.
Hope this is true. Lynch is a stud and was considered the heart and soul of UNC's 1993 championship team. I saw him at Bubba's a few weeks ago, so he's definitely been in the vicinity of the campus. Having another national champion on the staff should help with recruiting.
If he was hired two days ago, where's the big announcement?? Didn't SMU learn anything about PR from the botched Tubbs firing? Maybe they're waiting to have one big press conference to announce the hiring of Lynch, the results of the NCAA investigation of hoops, the real reasons for firing Tubbs, the involvement of Max Williams, the starting quarterback, the building of a new basketball facility, the award of the Dubya bookmobile, the discovery of Jimmy Hoffa under Peruna's stall and successful cold fusion.
Don't forget what exact kind of detergent it was. Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
If George Lynch has been hired, I presume there are waiting to announce it until after:
1) he announces his retirement from the NBA and makes all those arrangements 2) SMU has vetted the new contract which can always take a few days to go through channels
Equally likely, SMU wants to make all staff announcements together, which I don't know if it has been finalized.
What about Hoffa? I do not propose adding him to the staff, although he could probably still coach big men as well as Dement did.
Matt's new blog entry says that Lynch is working out with the players and playing pickup with them, not that he has been hired. (He would not be allowed to play pickup this time of year if he were a coach.) But that's not to say he won't be hired.
Lynch was a really hard-nosed guy who forged quite a career by being tougher and outworking his teammates.
His presence has got to put a new spin on the summer pick-up games. Wonder if he'd just work out with them as a favor -- surely he doesn't need the money, right? -- and not join the staff, just to help out Coach Doherty.
No one's mentioned the Mustangs hiring Steve Lutz from Stephen F. Austin State University...
![]() DALLAS (SMU) - Steve Lutz has been hired as an assistant men's basketball coach at SMU, head coach Matt Doherty announced on Wednesday. Lutz comes to the Hilltop after six seasons as an assistant to Danny Kaspar at Stephen F. Austin. "Steve is recognized as one of, if not the top young assistants in the state of Texas," states Doherty. "I am thrilled to add him to our staff as he will open a lot of doors in this great state." At SFA, Lutz served as the Lumberjacks' recruiting coordinator and assisted in all phases of game preparation. Several of the recent recruiting classes were rated among the tops in the Southland Conference and among the best in the region. In six seasons at SFA, the Lumberjacks went 93-76, including a 71-44 mark over the last four seasons with 21 wins in both 2002-03 and 2003-04. The Lumberjacks went 57-51 in the Southland Conference during Lutz's tenure with .500 or better records four times, including a school-best 16-4 campaign in 2002-03. The Lumberjacks led the Southland in scoring margin and three-point percentage in two of his final three seasons as well as rebounding defense and rebounding margin in 2005-06. Lutz also spent four seasons as an assistant to Kaspar at Incarnate Word in San Antonio. During those four seasons, the Crusaders went 99-20, winning three regular-season conference titles and capturing the conference postseason tournament the fourth year. He also spent one season at Incarnate Word as the head golf coach at the university. Lutz played basketball for three seasons at Texas Lutheran and served as the team captain as a senior. He earned his undergraduate degree from Texas Lutheran in 1995 and a Master's of Education there in 1997. Lutz played one season at Ranger Junior College prior to his arrival at Texas Lutheran. He and his wife Shannon have a daughter, Caroline.
