Hmmm...about this time last year, Rice was considering disbanding its football program because of lack of alumni & fan support. The Owls draw just as poorly, if not worse!, than the Mustangs. Now DC's TFM calls it 'the game of the year' for SMU? If ya'll don't see the sarcasm in that then...

As a Mustang fan, I'm insulted by it and the rest of you should be, too.

Insulted? As a Mustang fan, I feel we should be grouped with Rice. They beat us two years ago. It is not like we are going to get to a bowl game by playing a huge schedule. We have to win four games and then hopefully beat two other teams. If you replace Ark. St., SHSU, and UNT with programs from the Mountain West or Big 12, there is no way way we could make a bowl game this year. Just keep that in mind when some of you get so enthusiastic.

Despite rolling off those late season victories, we are a similar program to Rice. We have to consistently beat those squads before we start making plans for bowl games. If we get 4-6 wins, we will be on our way this year.

So do I, although a history of pot-stirring posts makes me skeptical at best.

SMu hasn't beaten Rice in Houston since the Reagan Administration. Get over it. If we can't beat a transitioning wishbone team then we suck.

Nor does your willingness to ignore reality.

I actually DO understand reality, thank you. But it's June -- a little early to beat the "we suck" drum. It's bad enough after a loss during the season, but now? Uncalled for, that's all.

I don't know if I would say Rice is the game of the year. Now, if we can beat UH for the 2nd year in a row, especially with Kolb, Marshall, and that new receiver that transferred from Arizona, that would be looked at as a step forward in our program.

That being said, Rice is the closest thing we have to a rival on the schedule. The Rice game in Houston is a must win.

I'll be in Houston to see the 'W' for the Mustangs in this so-called 'Game of the Year'. How about the rest of you?

Perhaps that's where the confusion lies. Yes, Rice is a must-win game. But to me, the game of the year is a big game, where we're aiming higher. I have no doubt that Graham will recruit some talent down there and make Rice a better team. But for now, I just don't "feel it" as game of the year.

I'm tempted to say Tulsa. Our talent is as good as theirs, and they made a bowl game. I'd like to see the Ponies kick their tails this year.
Dave Campbell's calls the Rice game SMU's 'Game of the Year.'

That, pleasure-seekers, is BS.

The GOTY is the one that, if won, would cause the greatest shock wave in all quarters; one that would turn heads - 360 degrees; one that would signal the return of our program.

THAT game, folks, is Sept. 2 at Lubbock.
THIS IS THE YEAR AND THIS IS THE GAME.

To review - post-death penalty near-shockers:

9/10/94 @#13 UCLA 17 SMU 10
10/14/95 @#22 A&M 20 SMU 17
10/29/94 (@S.A.)#7 A&M 21 SMU 21
10/1/94 #18 UNC 28 SMU 24
9/16/94 @#14 OU 24 SMU 10
9/27/97 #23 BYU 19 SMU 16 OT

It's time to win one of these.
The TCU win was huge. Tech would be monstrous. It's time....
IF YOU ARE GOING BACK LOOKING AT " Post Death Penalty near-shockers" WHY NOT LOOK AT THE REAL SHOCKERS, BEING THE THREE WINS IN A ROW AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS IN 1995 WHEN THE HOGS WON THE SEC WEST , 1996 A 31-10 MUSTANG VICTORY WHERE ARKANSAS RUSHED FOR MINUS 21 YARDS, WORST RUSHING GAME STATS. IN ARKANSAS FOOTBALL HISTORY, AND 1997 WHEN THE MUSTANGS BEAT THE HOGS AT ARKANSAS ! I am not talking about Arkansas St. either.

Now if Rice has a winning record and is contending for a bowl then maybe this is a different matter. What does Texas Football predict for Rice? :?
