Interesting poll on the home page. I'm surprised that so few think cornerbacks and the kickers will be the keys to a potential upset of Tech. As I see it, the kickers need to have a big day to make the Tech offense play on a long field, and the corners need to step up huge against all those receivers. Of course we won't shut down the Red Raider aerial attack completely, but they need to at least keep Harrell from going nuts.
In my opinion, the corners and kicking game might be the two MOST important parts of the game that day.

Do we even have any kickers this year?

Thomas Morestead, Andrew Galloway, Kellis Cunningham, Ryan Wolcott, Brayden Harris.
And there's a rumor about a transfer kicker.

Running backs are the most important. A good running game will eat up clock and keep that Tech offense off the field. A good running game also scores touchdowns, and to me touchdowns are better than field goals and punts.

We had four blocked punts last year--can any of these guys improve on that stat?

I would think we'd be looking to improve our blocking/consistency up front to avoid blocked punts, as well as the consistency of our deep snapper.

Okay, what have we done to improve on that? We had four blocked punts last year.

Hopefully we find the ability to convert more on 3rd down. If you recall, blocked punts included, our punter set the school record for most attempts.

Mentzel was great when he got the punt off.. but my gosh it was like watching paint dry once he got the ball snapped to him. Very slow getting the punts off.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

Tech is not Houston and I doubt that we will be in a position to win the game with a 52-yard field goal. If we are, with the winds in Lubbock we might be better off going ahead and trying the play that won us the UAB game ("Ok...run down the field and I'll throw it up for you!").

And don't forget in the UAB we had that defender just standing there waiting for the ball so he could catch it or bat it down or whatever he was planning to do.

Rogers and Haywood and Bonds and Muse (and their backups) need to bring big-time heat on Graham Harrell. If they can rattle his cage a little, hopefully Harrell will cough up a few errant passes .... which our DBs grab.
